[attachment 11849 Thanksgiving2005041.jpg]Hey guys,

I just spent a whirlwind Thanksgiving weekend in Washington DC visiting with family. This was my first trip that far east since I was a kid and we managed to cram a lot of sightseeing into one day.
Despite the 30 degree temps, we did a walking tour of all the more important monuments; Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington, FDR, then WW 11, Korea, and Vietnam. But the one place that was the highlight was the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. There is about dozen exhibits in this one building but I was only interested in two; the Prehistoric fossils and the Gem and Minerals.

They have an impressive display of gold but to be honest, I've seen just as good a specimens displayed on these forums. And it wasn't all that big either. The displays in Siskiyou and Placer county are just as big and impressive as this one was.

Never-the-less here are a few photos of what they had. I'll post these in separate postings to keep things from getting cluttered as to add a bit of comment when necessary.

This first one is the overall display showing pretty much everything in the case.

Cool shots, Bob...Do you or anyone else have shots of the Siskiyou Courthouse gold exhibit...It is the most incredible gold display I've seen ...I lived there and mined there for 23 years, before moving to the big AZ in '99, and I always made it to the courthouse once a month just to rejuvinate my juju...'Course, I was prospecting and mining a lot of the places that those incredible nuggets came from, so it became real personal, If you know what I mean, and I think you do....The part of the display I really enjoyed was the platter full of nuggets from the craws of chickens who pecked up the glowing golden bits...And that was from downtown Yreka...Cheers, Ron
