Rob and I had a wonderful opportunity to hunt in Virginia this past weekend. We were invited to participate in a relic hunt in Suffolk, Virginia. This was a 125 acre area that had two old home sites and also had some CW activity around it. They limited the hunt to 40 people and we were thrilled for the opportunity not to mention getting out of crazy cold Cleveland even for a few days!!
The weather was chilly to start out with but warmed up to a sunny 50 degree day. It felt so good to be swinging my Etrac....I think we had one warm day back on February 22nd and I found my first silver of 2014 (Mercury Dime - pictured). So Rob and I were really eager just to get out and set ourselves up for opportunity for some great and exciting finds.
Rob and I headed out to the second home site since everyone else seemed to start out at the first. It was a bit of a hike but we were the only ones there at first. After about an hour, I headed out towards the bean field. It was a sea of tilled soil and harvested soybean rows. It was overwhelming to look at but I told myself just put the Etrac down and let her do her thing. I heard a decent signal but it was scratchy and I thought ... probably a nail or iron but 13:46 kind of hung in there and it was about 9-10" deep. The soil is very sandy so digging was super easy and no worries about covering holes so meticulously. I got to digging and boom...I see the large cent. I was like..NO WAY..I almost didn't dig it. Turns out, it was an 1817 and she's in pretty good shape for being almost 200 years old! Pictured is a before and after she was cleaned up. I head over to show Rob and as it never fails, I see him from a distance and realize he has just dug something spectacular as others head over to where he was at. I thought... seriously....can I have a few minutes of my own glory. ha ha ha. Actually, I was really excited for him because based on the reactions to those around him, I knew it was something GREAT!! I take a peak and WHOA...it was a huge 10k gold high school class ring. This is Rob's first gold find so we were elated. It was probably the most spectacular find at the hunt. I then showed my find and everyone was like ... "oh that's nice" ... and marveled at Rob's find again. ha ha - No I'm just kidding. Of course, those around me were really happy for my find too.
The next day we got out to do some more field hunting. This time it was on a cotton field (pictured). Another mass of tilled and harvested cotton rows. It was such a beautiful day. It got up to 75 degrees and sunny. Just a perfect day to be out hunting. Rob found a fantastic Navy button (not pictured yet as it is soaking in olive oil still). I will upload a picture when it's cleaned up. I scored another large cent but it's pretty rough and she is also soaking in an olive oil bath. I did upload her "before" picture though.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. We had a fabulous time hunting!! Crazy though...75 degrees on Sunday ....we left early Monday morning and just missed a winter storm that hit the same area we were just detecting in.
HH everyone and can't wait for the temps to warm up so we can swing swing swing!!!
