Vintage Lipstick Tube

I hit a few more rows at the tree farm. I found an old lipstick holder. It is marked Solitair / Ampana Corp Dist. / Batavia, Ill. I found an ad from 1940 for it. I knocked the sand out of it and in the bottom there was still some of the red lipstick. I also found a shot gun shell casing. The paper is long gone.

UMC - Union Metallic Cartridge Company.
"1867-1911. Combined with Remington to form REM-UMC from 1911-1934. 1934 bought out by Dupont to from Remington Arms Co., as it still stands today."

Shotgun Shell ID site

His other pix with the cap grenade also has a UMC Majestic shell.. It is a #12
also.. The one in the lipstick pix being a Monarch.
According to one source..
"From 1891 through 1905, UMC added other lines of shotshells including New Club, Nitro,
Smokeless, Lightning, Black-Club, Arrow, Nitro Club, Monarch, Majestic, Acme, Challenge,
Expert, High Base, Magic and Primrose Club."

They merged in 1911, but operated as separate companies until 1916.
So both of those shells are no newer than 1916 I would think.
Also, the lipstick almost looks older than the 1940 version to me..
Might be the same, but the container looks slightly older than 1940 for
some reason. That's something else finding lipstick still in it after all
that time.

Betcha it still SMELLS like lipstick, dunnit?

I've dug a few over the years.

Nice work, findin' the old ad. I tracked down a 1956 Colgate ad to accompany some old toothpaste tubes I dug up.

Hey, BTW, thanks for the shotgun shell ID link. I'm gonna bookmark that one. I got two the other day. They're one of my more common finds. Maybe when I become educated in ID-ing and dating them, I won't hate them quite as much.

I remember finding one that said "Robin Hood" on it, which had an actual date in the early 1900s. (Or what I assumed was a date, anyway).

I'm thinking about throwing a few in the tumbler and see if I can shine them up. I don' think the 1901 refers t the date they were made. There are other ones with numbers on them like that.
