Video request...

Active member
Since you guys who already have the AT are obligated to make videos (I am kidding!! I am smiling and mean no harm... nothing but good will, no hidden agendy or double meaning... just kidding)... anyway...

First let me say I really appreciate the videos, Ihave tried to make some and I KNOW it isn't easy, so Thank You for all the videos!!!

I, for one, would love to see videos with hot girls... NO... just kidding again!!! I would love to see videos showing the hunt. I would love to see videos with the sound of the detector searching up to the target... like find what is thought to be a good target, back up 10' and film the VDI screen and record the audio while approaching the target then finding the target... so that the viewer (me) will see and hear how the detector hunts and how it responds to a target.. .then dig the target (don't need to see the digging) then show the target (need to see that) then show how the detector responds the the target laying on the ground, to see if there is any difference from the way it responded while still in the ground.

Now... it is only a request, not a demand. I really appreciate all that has been and will be done and am in NO WAY complaining... so please dont misunderstand me or read anything into this post... it is what it is.

I have a lot of detectors and am always interested in another... the AT is on the list. I have purchased a lot of machines when they were released and have not personally contributed with my own videos, I realize that... I am just trying really hard to make this request without offending anyone, because I really dint want to offend.

While we are talking about videos... what kind of camera should I get to make videos and easily upload them. I was going to get a Flip-HD but i've been seeing people post that they don't like it. I thought it would be easy. I can make a vid I thing but I need something that will be simple to upload too.

Thanks...

Julien

I like the idea of the hot girls! Seeing how the detector responds before digging is good too.

Obviously, you have never heard of or seen the "Garrett Gals"...they travel North America extensively, making sure Garrett users remain honest and hunt with a certain amount of integrity.:bouncy:

Thanks, and really, I was not complaining. I almost didn't post but what the heck... I am glad for anything anyone does to try and help other people learn... it is all helpful, IMO.

I will take some time to look. I am thinking of doing some detector selling and I will probably try an AT in the spring. I am getting older and arthritis does not like it when I hunt in the cold, so I have a little time... I can't wait for the spring!! The azaleas begin to bloom here in late Febuary.

John are they looking for one with a black bathing suit now ?

:usaflag:I have been using the video camera that is part of my I Pod. Not the highest quality, but very effective.

In the woods its tough to do now with all the leaves. Most days when I can get out its windy so I would not make one.
Going to a field Sunday. If the snow has melted and the wind is lite I will accommodate your request.

Well it is tough to make a video for several reasons! One, it's sometimes hard to slow down and 'document' everything when you really want to just hunt. Another, if you're A.D.D. like me, is that you may want to include some aspects of the hunt in the video. I couldn't resist it when I was hunting an old house last time-I HAD to throw in a few ideas I had on getting to areas the others have surely missed! Other considerations are the conditions like wind, dark, etc. I've had to come up with a whole new set of redneck inventions to mitigate some of my issues-like mounting my Flip to the brim of my cap! BTW-that's not totally my idea, but one I copied from a much younger redneck youtuber..

I use a Flip and have a love/hate relationship with it.

The good:

small
light
1 hour of video time
basic editing software comes with it
battery life is excellent
video is smooth without pixellating when you swing the camera on an 'action' shot

The bad:

because it's small your video can be very shaky and also prone to making the viewer sick when you spin around to change view
microphone is small and you really have to work to get the right volume with your speaking
zoom is very limited
macro INHALES-don't even bother! To be fair, it doesn't have this 'mode', so it's not like they've advertised it for this purpose
it's so smooth that it's hard to hold onto with gloved hands

So, how would I rank the Flip? Buy one. But buy it on fleabay and DO NOT spend a lot of money on it! There aren't many options out there for video cameras this small, and even the competition will suffer the same issues as the Flip. It's a good little 'general purpose video' unit.

My workarounds:

hiking staff mount-the Flip uses the std 1/4x20 mounting
brim of cap mount-drill a hole, insert a 1/4x20 and go to town
bicycle grip tape around the body so you can keep a good grip

If I can get my act together today I'll get another vid of an old house I've been working over. It's my personal challenge to find silver there! It has been hit HARD over the years and the owner told me so 2yrs ago when he gave me permission. Still, with the AT Pro and some physical work on my part to access undetected areas, I WILL FIND A SILVER COIN YET!

I think most all the latest cameras will do the job pretty well. The Flip -HD should do fine.
In my case, I use my still camera for video. "Sony DSC W290".
I prefer a regular camera as the still image quality is usually better, and the video
is still fairly decent. The W290 does 720p HD. The best way to record is to use a
tripod and have someone else shoot the video while the other runs the detector.
But if only one person, I would use the tripod and try to get the best angles to
the machine as possible. I had a home built tripod I was using, but I picked up
another one about a week ago that is much better. It can pan, tilt, pretty smooth.
I agree about ebay.. You can find some deals if you look.
I bought two Sony W 290's off ebay, and basically got two for the price of one.
At the time, the usual retail was about $220-$230 or so, but I got one for $87+tax,
and the other for $128+tax I think. Both were in mint shape, and the second one
I got was still in the box with all the goodies. I'm using one for a trail cam, and
the other for a hand held. Both of those were Best Buy store demos, or returns.

I like the W290 because it has a fairly decent Zeiss lens. It's 5x zoom, but the
zoom can't be changed while video recording on that camera. You can only
change the zoom in standby when in video mode. It's not a huge issue to me,
but it bugs some people. :/
In stills mode, it's 28-140 mm -35 mm equivalent. So it's semi wide angle at
the shortest focal length.

Show some poone and everyone gets off track.:detecting:

I hope no one takes my post as ungrateful... I really don't mean it that way. I was just thinking that if someone is making a video already, i'd really like to see the "lead up". Like after you find something you're gonna dig.. back up a few feet and film walking up to the target and ove it... then dig it... to me, that would be very cool... then again I am not the one doing it but I want to be really sure that you and others know I don't mean to anger anyone or diss anyones videos. It is all good and I appreciate it all.
I will try to do some myselfin the spring and i'm sure that they wont be nearly as good as the ones that are being posted now.

Anyway, if my request seemed offensive to anyone... I did not mean it to be.

Thanks!
