Vibraprobe 580

Got it yesterday and tried it out in the field today. Placed it on my belt instead of the Garrett Pro Pointer. I always use the X-1 on the E-Trac but thought I'd give it a try as it's waterproof and good to 100'. Don't have to worry about rain.
Air testing on most coins was about 1.5" It's easy to turn on an off and really is not sensitive up and down the shat like the Pro Pointer It's only hot on the tip. But...it was really hard to use with the E-Trac. It was interfering with the E-Trac to the point that I had to really make sure the coil on the ET was as far from the 580 as I could get it. It still then had a little interference. That has never been a problem with the Pro Pointer.
Nothing lost here. I didn't really get it for land. I'll use it while diving just like I do the land probes. Don't know yet if it'll cross talk with my Tiger Shark or my Dual Field. That's next. Jim

Let me know how you like the VP 580, need one for the Cheaspeake Bay hunting..in the process of making a sifter, looking for netting like pic. {need 6 feet for 2} Found some but they want 96 cents a foot, but 25 dollars for shipping, and a 15 dollar service charge for orders below 50 dollars..they suggest getting 53 feet...to get out of the service charge:rofl: Any Ideas? Anyway, good luck with your new toy, keep us informed. thanks joe

Hi OBN,

You can find decent netting at restaurant supply houses. I built one basically like your no metal. I hang my 580 right from the side of the floating sifter. If you live in a large metro area or near one you should be able to find it and it is not that expensive. Exactly what is the stuff you are looking for? Someone posted a message a while back on pipe wrap used in extreme locations and I believe that company is right here in the Seattle area or there is a distributor here, if you can get the name of the outfit or the material, I will try and track some down for you.

Best Regards,
Steve

Thanks for the great tip!!! I'm looking to get a 580 and hanging one from a sifter might work well for me.
As I run a pulse (Infinium) I don't really want to keep the probe on my side due to cross interference between the two.............!

Hey OBN! How does your experinece with the 580 differ from mine? Or do you differ about what I said about the other probes. A jab in the ribs doesn't work to well if the person you jabbed isn't smart enough to catch it. I missed it entirely.
Steve is a man of his word and is always willing to help out another water hunter, If he can get that netting he will and it'll be on it's way shortly. Jim

Max is talking about a spot We have recently discovered located in the Bay....Lots of History, this spot......And he knows what I am getting ready to do..,

I am very interested in getting the 580 for use at this spot... Figured if anyone would know it would be you, and I trust your word 100%!

Thanks for the info ToniSteve ...Will check on the netting local first, I am in Baltimore so it maybe right in front of me. will let you know, here is the link to the stuff I was looking at, http://www.industrialnetting.com/plastic_extruded.htm Item number xb1029 they sent me a nice sample, very tuff stuff...here is a pic of a friend of mine, Joe in maryland, sifter with the pipe cover netting. Looking for no metal at all on the sifter, was thinking about using a X-1 for the job, but to incorporate a old explore into the sifter, would be a pain in the xxx

Had to lighten the pic in PS to see the netting...Thanks Guys......Joe

Joe,
I don't think you will have to go far, I would try here first, they probably have or can get something very similar to what you need/want or they would know where to get it:

L. E. Jones Wire Cloth - Baltimore, MD
Manufacturer, Custom Manufacturer
http://www.lejonesco.com/page7.htm
Company Profile: Manufacturer of mesh & mesh products including plastic mesh. Plastic mesh is available with mesh sizes ranging from 1/16 in. up to 3/4 in. & 36 in. & 48 in. material widths. Plastic meshes feature extruded polyethylene netting. Markets served include private, industrial, institutional, commercial,...

The restaurant grade plastic may not be the ticket you are looking for, but is what I used!

Have loads of fun!

Kind Regards,
Steve

OBN, try a noise cancel with the probe switched on and wiggled over the coil, not tried it on the 580 but it works with the pocket uniprobe

My V-probe does interfere with my Dual Field and also my other PI machines!

When I use it I have to push my coil well away from the sifter while I search.

When I finish with it I push it up-right into the space between my sifter and its float until the probe shuts off.

The sifter is dragged behind me far enough away to allow me to continue hunting without the interferance.

CJ

CJ,
I do the same. It interferes with my Tiger Shark which is a vlf. Have to be a foot and a half away. Does your 580 float? Mine floats tip up in the water.

Bets Regards,
Steve

Hi CJ,
So much for neutral buoyancy! I can't wait to hear how Jim's (GrumpeyOldMan) tests out as far as buoyancy! Thanks for the response! By the way I tested and use mine in fresh water but that should not change the way it ends up in the water. Mine floats with the tip flush with the water surface, in salt it would probably stick up a bit. If I tethered it while diving it would turn off quicker just letting it go then waiting for the timed switch off.

Best Regards,
Steve

Things float higher in salt water, but I just realized that maybe my unit floats differently because it is a 570 and not a 580!!

Best to Ya,

CJ

Steve...Which tip floats on the surface. If it's the hot tip, then it'll turn itself off as soon as you let go and it's starts slowly towards the surface. Still havent't been with mine in the water. I expect good things. There are so many times I've looked and looked for something as I fanned it out of the hole I was making. Then pick up the tector and move it around and try to find where the metal went. With the 580 being waterproof, I expect it be very close to working with a ProPointer on land. Jim

Hi Jim,
The hot tip floats up and yes tethered when you let it go it shuts down, instead of having to wait for the delay, which seems to last forever. I was upstairs air testing the Excal with different targets just to learn tones. I try to do it for 5 or 10 minutes each day. It "ain't" no lullaby that is for sure! By the way the ProPointer has more depth, but for what and how I use the 580 depth is not the issue!

Have fun!

Best Regards,
Steve

Steve...Did you get the lanyard that is offered as an accessory? I ordered one but it's not here yet. After getting the 580 and seeing how the closure for the battery compartment operates, like a drain plug on a boat, the collar looks like a great place to attach a 'key holder' type split ring. I see getting one slightly larger than the threaded plug, but small enough it wont' slip off the larger end. It would then be nice to connect the lanyard to that ring. Maybe a wire tie around the collar would work also. I am thinking only tying a good knot would have a potential risk of working loose in the water and there goes an expensive tool. Picture that thing drifiting loose and someone down the beach picking it up and looking at it. Looking it over the finder's curiousity goes up and the begin examining it. When they have finally turned it over and again and it points upward, turns on, and vibrates, I bet they wet their pants and throw it. Jim
