very strange wheatie

I found this wheatie just below the gravel on the ground that is used as a walkway for a baseball park. I didnt really look at it till hours later and found that half the date,, in god we trust,, the LI in liberty and the e pluribus unim are all missing from the coin. the B in liberty is somewhat visable but it is on the rim of the coin. For some reason I put the coin on top of another penny and found that it was smaller. then i did the same with a dime. It was a littler smaller as well.

Going to go to my sisters tomorrow and see if i can get a good up close pic of it to post.

Took it to a coin shop. He said its been altered. Thinking about it, I cant see how a die could cut the size down to a dime. I did find a few posts on the net of people find the same thing.
Oh well, the search goes on for better things. I hope.

Hmmm, Coud it have been a penny blank that slipped in to the planchette press for a dime then struck as a penny, or a penny that was struck in a dime die.

I have a mint shape 1963 penny that is a mint error, stamped off of center. Someone said mine is not worth that much, and coin mint errors are not worth much, I wish they were.

I remember there was a postage stamp with the airplane picture? on it accidently printed upside down and it was worth a fortune.

Odd things can happen the coin stamping process. I used to work in a bank and wrap mint money, my collection includes quarter blanks, quarter blanks with ridges, penny blanks, pennys struck 50% off center, and dime blanks with ridges but no nickel plating. You never knew what would turn up in those mint bags back in 1978. Unfortunately for me none of my off centers show the dates. I can't say that I saw any with missing letters.

The more i thought about the coin after I spoke to the coin dealer, if the penny blank was cut by a dime punch, the penny wouldnt have any rim on it like this coin.
