"Very Old Detector"

I have picked up this very old metal detector that has two square boxes on each end, connected by slats,(I believe you stand in the middle of it while detecting). It has tubes inside each of the boxes and seems its all there, however the batteries are certainly no good, and I have no headphones. Could this be a 1931 fisher matalliscope? I would love any knowledgable info in it,possible value, collectability, tradeability ect. you may call me at (940) 595-8228 Thanks Keith

Hi Keith,

Thank you for sharing your recent M-Scope discovery, she is a beauty especially to have survived all these years.

Can't say for sure the year yours is but differently thirties, is it an early thirties hard to say but looks to be a thirties model.

As a collector of vintage metal detectors, M-Scope (aka) FisherScope detectors are my favorites. I do have a forties model similar to yours, A user would stand between the two wooden control boxes holding onto the wooden rails and walk in forward direction.

Will enclose several pictures from FisherScope with the wooden two-box, and a pic of my M-Scope model.

If possible, display it so that others who visit your home sharing the same interest can see one of the first metal detectors made.

Thanks again for sharing,
Paul (Ca)

kivy31, thanks for posting. Nice nostalgic piece. Can you post a better pix, that's not as fuzzy? And is there any writing at all, anywhere on there?

There is no shortage of 2-box units from the '40s and '50s that show up at flea markets, CL, ebay, etc.... There were a lot of them sold in those years. That was before the advent of the more typical configuration of standard loop detectors, which weren't seen as much, till the mid or late 1950's.

As far as the "value", as I say, there's no shortage of them that show up. But perhaps if yours is truly from the '30s (as opposed to the '40s or '50s), you might find some interest. But the truth is, there's not a lot of vintage detector collectors out there. And those that do collect, have usually long since found their sample pieces. What is more interesting to vintage collectors, is the standard coil types that were capable of finding coin-sized targets from the '50s, as those were oddities for their time, and a variety of efforts came and went during that time.
