Went to a HEAVILY pounded site today that has given up very few targets in recent visits. In the past it was rich with stuff from Colonial to present, several nice buttons, numerous Barbers, etc. It's a tough site...there's a lot of iron in the ground...rusty nails galore, as well as other rusted trash and some house parts.
I have the CZ-70 and if you hunt this place with Iron notched in, you can't go 3 feet without hearing that raspy iron blip. When you do find a good deep target, there is always iron nearby and it masks or often breaks up the signal, causing you to either miss it or think it's trash. So I usually hunt with iron notched out. I tried something different today and it worked for me. I notched in everything, including iron. There wasn't too much trash, but the iron was talking steady. When I got a good coin or relic signal, HEARING the iron as well as the signal from the coin was a huge help. And it allowed me to attack the target from numerous angles to find the spot where I could isolate the good signal from the bad. It worked several times and allowed me to find targets that I and several others have missed repeatedly in the past. I was using the 8" coil today and have usually had the 10.5" in the past at this site. Next time I'm hitting it with the "hockey puck" coil, and will definitely be keeping everything notched in. Now that we have seriously cleaned this site up, it's the only way to hunt it and find stuff. And after today, I have no doubt that this "hunted out" site has a few more "keepers" left to give up.
