Very Disappointed in the AT Pro

I just received my AT Pro back from Garrett yesterday and was really excited to get out today and use it. I was hunting a yard that was 100 years old. I hunted along the sidewalk to the house and just got a lot of chatter. By the way, Garrett sent me a new coil. My son was using his Ace 350 and I asked him to go over the same area, one minute later up comes a 1927 Wheatie. I had mine set in Pro mode coins. A few minutes later on the other side of the side walk at 6" he digs up a 1893 Barber Quarter. I kept going and had a hit with a target number 98 at 4". I thought here's my silver quarter, no such luck, fricken tin foil!!!! I think my machine is still screwed up. When i got home I buried a penny at six inches. In Pro mode coins it just chattered in the 40's. I switched to Std mode coins and bam, every time I went over it, 76. Am I just stupid or does my machine have a problem? I'm getting very discouraged. I have always owned Garrett's but now am thinking of switching brands. Do you guys have any advice? I am going to send it back Monday and ask them to replace it.

Thanks
Dave

I just got my AT Pro yesterday and it out performs other brands. Did you ground balance your machine? Did you have it set in "coin" in the Pro mode? Do not expect this machine to act like the Ace in the Pro mode, put it in the STD mode for coin hunting on dry land. What was your sensitivity set at? I was finding coins extremely deep at the beach today. Go back over your manual and check out some videos on the Garrett forum.

I used my wifes new ATPRO for the day and found out not to set the sensitivity to high in the pro mode, I love the little ding it gives in the stand mode I felt more confortible in standard I think the pro mode will require a little patience and learn the machine, it think it is a very good machine for the money, high end for a medium price, I have MXTPRO but I think the ATPRO goes just as deep its a keeper:wiggle:

I never read too much into saying one machine found something the other machine couldn't. This is mostly due to getting the coil over a certain target and in such a way that it's seen by any machine. The only way to do it is to use all the machines over a target before it's dug.
Now you say in pro mode you get chattery 40's and in std mode the same target reads a solid 76. Now this is more of a concern as both modes should read the same numbers. If this holds true on more tests I would suggest sending it back.

Hang in there, I'm having the same problem, the machine is going back to Garrett. The machine is ground balance and the sensitivity is turned down, I think they are a little bit in a hurry to get them back out to the customer. When I got mine back it was falsing. I was reading on one of these threads that another customer got there's back and it had a different digital reading plate on it. Possibly the Euro plate. Just contact Garrett they will work with you. There customer service is the best.

Well this reminds me of when my mom calls and says "whats the matter with my computer"? I cant see from here!

Listen I am not saying that there is nothing wrong with your Pro. But Pro mode takes a little getting used to. I will say this... I you cannot find those finds in Standard with Iron disc up to 40. You have a real problem. Are you keeping notes on your settings. Some modes do not remember!

! don't leave iron audio on.Switch to it when you find a questionable target. There are allot of finds (coins) that you do not need Iron audio!
Start in STD MODE, Iron disc up to 40... You will find coins...if there are any there! Lower the Iron disc...The more junk you will find. Now if you are relic hunting This thing hits on iron!!!!!
Learn Zero Mode slowly. (one day just hunt medium tones)

Start the learning curve all over. Try std mode iron disc to forty/ go to zero mode dig only med and high targets and practice using iron audio.
good luck

The Pro ( stands for PROFESSIONAL ) has quite a bit of a learning curve. You can't just pop it out of the box and start finding goodies with it. Spend some time with it and learn it and it will reward you. The Pro mode is not simple to use.

Almost all Garretts are super sensitive and should be run with low sensitivity. This is the biggest problem Garrett users have, cranking that sensitivity too high then wondering why their detector goes bananas and blaming it on the machine, plus they don't spend enough time with the detector to learn how it actually operates. You can't just turn it on and start finding treasure.

Thank you all for your input. I purchased the detector in December and have used it about 60 hours so far. I have found nearly 300 coins with it. The reason I sent it back in the first place was because the LCD was fading out and the machine was falsing. Wouldn't you think this machine would air detect a silver half dollar at more than 6 inches?

If you have already turned your sensitivity down and it didn't help you can also change your frequency which might help. The AT has 4 different frequencies that can help eliminate interference such as underground/overhead electric lines, TV signals, your cell phone, and interference from other detectors. My AT goes nuts when I am getting an email or phone call on my iPhone but stops after I receive them. I have a test garden I planted in my back yard which I can't even use most of the time with my sensitive detectors because of all of the utilities and stuff in the air around my house and my neighbor's house. Other detectors also made my AT go nuts last week but after switching the frequency I could hunt right next to them.

graycote ,
I've been phoning in all those finds that you have been collecting .....I guess your AT Pro has been getting the messages huh ? ....... ........Jim

Honestly, I wish all manufacturers would just ditch the term 'Pro' or 'Professional.' Way over-used, and not necessarily correct. many models with the word 'Pro' lack ample adjustment functions to make them appeal to a savvy businessman, or woman, who rely upon its performance for part of their Professional Income Source.

You can see the word or term used way too often even on lower-end models. Besides, there are some applications where the saturated audio of the 'STD' or 'Standard' search mode can be more appealing for someone using a detector in the course of their business or work (Profession). I know one guy in Utah who prefers the saturated audio of the Ace 250 for locating property stakes and pipes as part of his occupation (aka 'profession') than he did the modulated audio of the Tesoro model he used to use.

I like the fact Garrett metal Detectors saw fit to incorporate two detector functions in a new model entry, and it ought to appeal to many current users of other Garrett Detectors which rely on a saturated audio.

As for the AT Pro's 'PRO' or 'Proportional' audio, more popularly termed a modulated audio, this is a more versatile operating choice for those who might want just a little better depth and/or the ability to discern more target character or information.

Sadly, even the folks who proof-read the Owner's Manual missed a few things (overall the manual isn't too bad) and even they referred to the term Professional as well as Proportional which can add to the confusion.

Personally, there are times I like to use the saturated audio of the STD (Standard) mode when I've worked with the AT Pro, but most of the time I prefer to work it in the much more informative 'PRO' or 'Proportional' modulated audio function. Now, if they can get all the glitches fixed in this one model then I might be ready to see two or three new 'land-based' models brought to the market based on the strong points of the AT Pro.

I think I will start using STD mode if targets are not too close together. After I detect a target I will then switch to Pro mode for a closer look.
My hearing is not what it once was and I may be missing something in Pro mode.

Dave, if your Pro only detects a silver half at 6", then you still have problem machine. Sounds like it needs to go back to Garrett...I'm sure they will take care of you Dave.

While the advice some have given is well intentioned, I don't think it applies to Dave...he has enough hours on the machine to know whether he is over-driving in Pro Mode. I have read many posts claiming good results running the AT Pro at full sensitivity, so I doubt that is the problem. Keith Southern has posted several times that he can run his smoothly, even when not neutrally ground balanced, so a problem free AT Pro should be more stable than Dave describes.

At some point, perhaps you need to ask Garrett to swap your machine for a new one...too many troubles for a brand new machine.

Hurried work is worried work, A job not well done is not a well-done job. I applaud Garrett for taking care of the issues that has plagued the AT Pro, they really do have a good customer service dept. I also think with as many that have been returned a few may have got rushed to fix, whatever the fix was. Garrett didn't come right out and say exactly what the problem was or if there was multiple problems. Mine still isn't as stable as I would like "I'm chalking it up as EMI right now" and my coil, coil cable and coil connector all have marks or been marred and hopefully just cosmetically. The thing is we all payed for a new detector in good working order, and are entitled to what we paid for or as was mentioned should swap out the new defective detector for a new working detector if that eases some peoples mind, I know it would mine because I have yet to use mine due to weather conditions etc other than in my backyard for some tests over my test bed. Yet already the detector is marred as though I have many hours on it, if I decide I'm not happy with the detector or just can't grasp using it, when I try to trade it in or sell it and people see these marred areas are they going to believe the detector is barely used and give a good price for it? A little confidence goes a long way and if a person believes there is something wrong with their detector or there is literally something wrong with it and are not confident in it's ability it's not worth using or having to that point IMO.

I think most here are seasoned detectorist and those who aren't usually say so and I know most are just trying to help but if someone says something is wrong with their unit I tend to take them at their word and I don't take it as a personal knock on a brand I'm using as with all electronics it's not uncommon for something to be faulty.

dont send it back, send it to my house, I know whats wrong with it,, oh ya, Im waiting on mine to get here any way .

That sucks Dave. That is strange Getting a 40 reading in pro and 76 in standard. You said you buried a fresh penny and tested. i ve buried fresh coins and could not even get a signal????????? I guess youve seen enough replies . Iknow you have to pizzed off.

D, I was not having as much problems with mine as others. I sent mine in to make sure it is at is optimum level of operaztion. Not just ok. Send it in. Or call and ask for a replacement.
Good Luck!
