Vernon, here's what happens when one is not careful ( talkin' 'bout me) with handling a relic

THE OTHER DAY I RECOVERED THIS ANTIQUE THIMBLE FROM LOW TIDE MUD; RESEARCHED IT AND DISCOVERED THAT IT WAS A "FOLK ART DESIGN " THIMBLE FROME THE 1800'S....SILVER

TOO BAD I WAS SO ANXIOUS TO SEE THAT FOLK ART DESIGN. AFTER ONE SOAK IN AMMONIA TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF LOOSENING THE THICK TARNISH, I POKED AROUND THE THIMBLE WITH A TINY NEEDLE TO TRY TO REMOVE A BIT OF THE LAYER....

OH, YEAH..I REMOVED IT ...ALL OF IT , INCLUDING THE THIMBLE:cry:

FOR THIS ESCAPADE, I HAVE NO PUNS TO OFFER

THANKS FOR LOOKING

A friend initially offered to do electrolysis on it prior to the "accident", and he was going to stop over my house the next day, but I was soooooooo curious to see the folk art pattern, so I tried to start on it myself...BIG MISTAKE! My friend , an avid relic hunter and collector was somewhat speechless when I informed him of what happened, but we are still friends...:)

your loss Vernon..you could hold a molecule of history in your hand if you won the contest :smoke:

The Ammonia is what done you wrong. It corrupted the silver. You just put it into tarnish overdrive!

Weld spatter on a gold ring....soak it in warm salt water over night.

Lime or calcium encrusting something....Vinegar soak.

DO NOT mix ammonia and chlorine bleach together unless you have a death wish. And it will come quickly!

Baking soda in warm water is a good way to work off most other crusty gobs of goo with out damaging the structure of the metal.

Tooth paste works well, and is only mildly abrasive.
