Venting about yesterdays almost hunt!

I researched all the State parks I have a permit to detect. I have hit about 6 swimming beaches the last 2 months. It's cold but no ones around and that's the way I like it. So yesterday it was going it was about 40 degrees so I got the itch to scoop up a few gold rings! First I called the visitors center and asked if the gates to the lake was going to be open? She said sure. So I load all my stuff in the car and take out. It was about 62 miles from my house and took 1hr and 20 minutes one way. I had to drive through a couple of towns to get there. I found the site. I found the lake. I found the beach parking area. Now this is a site that I've been drooling about ever since I saw the satellite picture. OK, I stick my large coil on the 250. Plus my long handled scoop, gloves and away I went. I had to walk down a path to get to the beach. There it was! Just like I thought - large and sandy!!! Then I focused in on the ugly 6 ft high chain link fence that went all the way around the beach. Even extending into the water like 30 feet! Walk to the gate and it's locked!! I could hear the rings calling my name. "Come back - save us" It was hard to leave but I did. As I was driving out of the park I saw a sign that went something like this. "You are always welcome at the park" :rage:

I take it you didn't stop to ask why the locked gate and if you could get in?

I called the visitors center from the parking lot. I talked to the same girl that told me the lake was open. She said the lake is open but the beach is locked down. The beach is only open from Memorial day to Labor day. I was just at another State Park beach just 3 weeks ago. There was no fence. I was detecting about 5 minutes before a Ranger spotted me. He asked for my permit. So all was good there. I guess I'll have to go back and hunt the 2 hours in the morning that my permit says when the gate is open. From now on I'm going to be more specific with my questions about beach access. That was my mistake!

I did pull on the lock! I don't know if I would have went in or not in fear of loosing my little yellow buddy!!!!!

I've done that before Kenny, dove all the way and got there and all chained up, and i wasn't a happy camper either, like you said you have to get more info, me and my friend drove almost two hours to the place and we could'nt even hunt there.

Nice to hear from you Harold! I was hot under the collar. Pretty much at myself for assuming the beach was open. At least I didn't drive as far as you did! :buds:

Yea Kenny that's how you learn the ropes, same here we were both ticked off, it was a nice little swimming area, but they didn't allow metal detecting, we just asumed we could, NOT so we went somewhere else and did lousey.

Sounds rather familiar.:poke: If you were a fisherman, then it would have been 'the one that got away!'
Better luck next time.:beers:
Mick Evans.
