What VDI readings do you pass on the most often with your MXT? (meaning you choose not to dig them)

anything below 10,
trash VDI numbers that bounce around--that don't lock on.
# 50-55

I HAVE PICKED UP GOOD STUFF DOWN TO -10 ON MY MXT. SMALL GOLD ESPECIALLY.
JIM

Im sure if you are looking for relics you do not, but when treasure hunting and gold detecting do you shun anything below this. Also what VDI #'s do you prefer to dig when gold detecting. The high and low #'s, and how does the iron percentage affect your choice to dig. Thanks. HH

Depends on the area your hunting and probable finds.
The lowest VDI that I have found something good is right at 0 and that was a small gold charm. That was at a soft sand playground where I know there could be gold jewelry.
Best to select an area free of targets outside your home, then test your MXT on stuff you have like chains, rings, coins etc and see where they hit. Most of the smaller gold Ive found hits below the nickel mark at around 16 or 18.
You might not want to waste time in a park digging these lower signals hoping for a ring or chain as youll end up with alot of waded up foil and the like.
Depends on your trash tolerance and again whats "probably" in the area.

Kinda sounds alittle like if it beeps... DIG ! Hey try this, next time your out put a piece of black tape over the screen, listen to the beeps, if it is sharp and clear, dig, if it sounds fuzzy or broken don't dig. Not trying to be a S/A but too much goes into these VDI's. For instance, your in an area diggin alot of tabs and trash that range from the teens to the 40's, a lot of them sound good and don't have a bouncing vdi, well you get another beep, 37 vdi, dern tab, but what if... it might be....and it was a great big class ring , another school play area tabs tops and zippers galore all sound good vdi's teens to 40's again hit a 30 vdi another zipper ?? nope another nice big class ring, yet another school diggin a ton of tabs all 20-22 vdi's hit another 22 vdi a smaller girls class ring, another school hit a 41 vdi a nickel and quarter laying together at 4 inches. I also dug a small gold charm with a vdi of 8. That day I also filler my bag with small foil and tabs, If if would not have dug about every beep I would not have found the cross, what do you do ?? Well Once I get fustrated with digging the trash I won'y dig it if it reads lower that 16 which is the lowest reading I have gotten on a nickel. Small gold jewelry is nice to find but normally few and far between and most sizeble rings will read 16 or higher. I feel like any item can read way off as far as vdi's depending on the situation, trash, iron , corrosion and the list goes on, the only sure fire method to know what your beepin on is dig it up. You ever notice that at times you spend more time looking at the meter than you do looking at the ground ??? Now if I were strictly coin hunting I would dig only 18-20, and 74-84. And at this I'll still leave some coins and who knows what else behind . You can run a disc of 3 and still you'll get some foil. Well I recon thats enuff of this long windedness fer now. <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">
Keep them swingy thingy's swingin

That is what makes this hobby interesting "and" frustrating. There is no 100% answer on what is awaiting you any VDI reading.
Yeah, you can almost be 98% certain on some readings as quarters, dimes, etc. But the elusive gold will drive you to drink if you try and figure it out.
HH to all,

The jewelry and good targets I have found have all been found when I have been hunting similarily to this. I am trying to find out if anyone has pinpointed a # amongst the desirable VDI's that has almost a 100% chance of being trash. It would be great to be able to discriminate out even this one number. Here is a couple more detailed questions. Is there a VDI # or Sequence of I.D.'s within the gold range that anyone avoids when hunting gold nuggets. And does it help to hunt gold jewelry in the prospecting mode

Can't help ya much on that Jason, don't think we got much gold here in VA. Prospecting mode is one I haven't put a lot of time into.I do know in air test pros. mode will hit a nickel further than coin or relic mode. Good luck.

Really enjoyed all the responses!!! I have a new MXT and will benefit greatly. MY QUESTION - In my area I find lots of 'crushed soda-pop' cans. They come in like a coin. i.e. quarters, etc. Are there any VDI nos. that will usually show me that it is a pop can? How can tell if it is a pop-can or a coin? I dig a lot of the cans - And they are usually deeper than shown on the screen.

I find that raising the coil 3 or 4 inches and the signal still sounds the same it is a bigger target like a alum can.

IN A FAIRLY CLEAN GRAVEL SCHOOL YARD I DIG ALL TARGETS SO AS TO CLEAN OUT ALL THE TRASH . I AM SURPRIZED AT THE STUFF I GET BELOW -10. ODD CHAINS TOYS IRON OBJECTS LIKE OLD SKELETON KEYS. YOU NAME IT IT SHOWS UP. GOT 7 LITTLE RINGS THIS WEEKEND AT SOCCER FIELD AT 29 TO 39. IN PROSPECT MODE I PICK UP STAPPLES REAL LOUD . MY TRUSTY MAGNET ON THE END OF A 24 INCH STICK POPS THEM RIGHT OUT OF THE SAND OR GRAVEL. ALSO FIND EAR STUDS AT BELOW O VDI. IN THE GRASS I GET 100S OF ALUMINUM SCRAP PIECES OF COKE CANS AT +8 VDI I IGNOR MOST UNLES SOMETHING TELLS ME DIFF. THE OTHER DAY I GOT THAT FEELING AND OUT POPED A 14K GOLD LADYS RING WITH SMALL CUT DIAMOND. IF IM NOT TOOO TIRED I DIG ALL TARGETS WHEN I GET TIRED I CALL IT A DAY AS I AMM GOING TO MISS THE GOLD.

RAY,
MAINLY I JUST USE THE METER FOR TO PLAY WITH. TO COMPAIR THE FIND TO THE READING ITS SOMETHING TO DO TO MAKE IT A LITTLE MORE FUN FOR ME. LIKE YOU I DIG ALL TARGETS EVEN THE O VDI FOIL. THIS TO HELPS YOU TO LEARN THE SOUNDS OF TARGETS.
