This is regarding Gene's post on Sunday 2/15 entitled: RING QUESTION in which I mentioned that Jim McCulloch gave a response to one of my questions last September. I did save it after all so am reposting Jim's response. This is the post that Art shared the jewelry markings. The following is related to the VDI readings of precious metal rings.

Johnny, as you may know, Hawkeye owns a jewelry business, which has given me a remarkable opportunity to test jewelry, especially gold rings. MOST women's gold rings made of platinum read out at from (about) -4 to (about) +5 on the MXT's VDI scale. Yes, you read that correctly; platinum can read out in the very low "-" range. NO, this is not really the "iron" range; this zone (0 to -20 or so) primarily covers soil mineralization. Since the "foil" range runs (about) -4 (for small bits of really rotten foil) to +5, this same "platinum" zone pretty much corresponds to the "foil" zone. Thus, if you want to dig platinum, you gotta dig foil, even the smaller pieces. Most women's gold rings of 10kt or 14kt purity read out from (about) +8 to +20, the MAJORITY reading out at +12 to +16. Hope this helps; yep, I'm back, sort of. HH Jim

... dig EVERY target from -4 to +20. If you really want to "cherry pick" then be absolutely certain to dig those VDI readings of 12 to 16. HH jim
