VDI Question..

I was at the beach today and I realized many times the VDI scale would toggle between "42" "99" "00" "44".... It would be a bottle top almost every time...

Is it safe to assume when it gives a number that "jumps around" that it is not a valuable target such as a ring ? and that I dont need to dig when I get that reading?

Thanks for your advice .. Just trying to fine tune my detecting skills my shoulder is killing me from all the digging I did today..

Happy Hunting,
JB

Hi, It's safe and the best not to assume anything with a VDI machine because there is to many variables to figure into the equation. The machine is trying to identify what is under the coil. It could be a coin and some other junk together so you will get an erratic reading.. Sometimes it will add the combination of the two items and give a totally different reading...Example a dime reads out let's say an 81 put a nail and coin together and it may VDI it at 42 etc... Hope this helps....JJ

A burried coin on edge will give you an eratic signal verses a burried flat coin will give a steady signal.

I agree on the bouncing vdi scale..............BUT I have an additional ? What would a high tone and a blank VDI reading be?

Have not come across that one yet. Not enought time on the AT PRO
If it was repeatable in both direction a few times may be worth digging it.

In my very limited experience at the beach with he AT Pro, VDI numbers that jumped around that much were always junk.

thats been my experience also.....but on the other hand, i have dug a coin or two in the same situation

DIG IT ALL !!!!!!!!!!::thumbup:

Yep.
We should all trade in our fancy MD's with the VDI's and audio ID's and buy a good basic Pulse Induction machine.
Then we could all dig to China and call it a day. LOL

In my limited experience with the AT-Pro if you see 00's and 99's (wrap around iron) popping up with a few in between #'s from all angles at a tight sweep, unless you need the exercise move along to greener pastures.

Or as some say DIG IT ALL.

Good Hunting

The audio is deeper than the vdi, if you get an audio target with no vdi its almost always a deep target. In the standard mode all targets have similar volume, in the pro mode deep objects give a fainter signal.---- audio hit and no vdi dig it

JB,

There you have it, dig, don't dig

When you first start learning a new machine, you should dig just about all iffy items under your coil. Just enough for you to feel comfortable as to what your hearing and seeing on your readout.

Honesty is what your looking for, so let me just tell you this: 1. At the start of the day, dig all the iffy readings, until you need to bring it down a notch because your getting tired. 2. When you reach that level
of tired either take a break, or change your hunting style to a slower pace, and only digging the good signals, all the while looking for the good deep faint signals.

In the end, it's us against our limitations as to how much we want to take home the gold.

Anyway, that's how I do it. There will always be those that say dig everything, and those that say always dig your hunches, and good signals.

I like to learn my detector so well that I need not dig everything. The only way to do that is follow the above advise above.

I have had your exact experience many times and it more than likely turns up to be a larger metal object...at least it has for me..and Ive dug them all......on dry land and in the water

On targets too deep for vdi, do the tones still ring accurate?
