VDI of tin? Anyone?

My dad insists he buried a tobacco tin full of indian heads and buffalos when he was little. The farm is still in the family and we've looked for it on and off since I was fifteen (actually, about everytime I get a new detector)....no one seems to be able to locate it. I figured maybe the VDI on the MXT could offer some assistance...anyone know what the VDI of tin is? Would it be different for rusty tin?

VDI reading??? It's not only the tin that will give out signals, but also the copper and nickels from the coins. How deep did he bury it? Granted it's going to be deeper! Dig dig dig.... that's all I can say. Good luck and happy digging, Nancy

However, you need to ask a few questions such as:

Is your dad positive he didn't recover the cache?

How deep does he recall burying it?

Does he remember any specific structure or vegetation references from the time of burial?

Were there any big (or little) brothers who might have known about the buried coins, or perhaps a close friend? I know that it's not uncommon for childhood "plantings" to be "up-rooted" by a sibling. Just something to consider.

"No one?" More than one person has searched for this hidden can of coins? Hummm.

Have you used the various model in the past, or the MXT presently, in either an All Metal mode or an all-metal accept (zero discriminate) setting? You're most likely looking for a buried, iron-based target. The rusty tin. The coins that are inside a closed contained are not the "target" that the electromagnetic field "sees" so, if you're using much discrimination, especially on an intentionally-buried object that's not close to the surface, then chances are you've been rejecting it.

Surface rusty tin can give a good audio response, even though often broken or "jumpy" on the VDI. On the other hand, with proper techniques (coil position and sweep speed), I can often get rusty tin to "reject" and show as iron. This is for small bits of rusty tin that are very shallow/surface targets..

Just turn the discriminate control to '0' (minimum) and search the site. Toggle into the All Metal Pinpoint mode to size-and-shape the target and get an indication of the target's possible depth and size. Recover those signals that have the most potential to be the buried tin can.
