VDI Numbers today

Blind Dr

New member
I was out hunting early today, and while using the pro I noticed my vdi numbers where a little funny. I was digging quarters and it was at 70-72 and was a zinc penny. This happened 13 times. All were quarters. Not one of them showed a quarter. I ground balanced the unit several different times and nothing at that point seemed to make any difference. I was also using the 5.3 coil on it. Not bad, but I still like it better on the M6. I was in some nice soil, not much trash at all and was in some nice black dirt. Anyone have any ideas?

sometimes when the sun is really bright and the ground is extremely dry my MXT Pro will do the same thing. Ive also heard it said if the moon is directly under foot that the magnetic field of the earth will mess with the readings. I don't really know about that but the dry ground will make my machine act crazy. Lee

[size=large]been having the same problem out here in s.w. washington since the ground started really drying up. lots of pennies posing as dimes and qtrs. not having this problem with my minelab explorer. may be the freq.

If you air test a target and you get the right VDI but a different VDI in the ground, it is either the strange mineralization or a bad ground balance. Another idea is if you are using a coil cover, dirt will get in between the cover and coil and mess things up too.

Well, I don't have a coil cover over it. hmmm

I was out last night for several hours and early today for about two hours. Both times again i was getting readings that were not correct. I was getting pieces of cans to read as a penny with a vdi of 77. I also had some 84 readings showing a quarter, which was a matchbox car and the other was a door knob. During my morning hunt, I was in a high trash area, lots of iron, pull tabs etc. I dug everything for the first hour just to see what the target was. Most of the time it was junk, pull tabs, foil, old cans, etc. I found that if I would walk away where there was nothing in the ground and ground balance again, it would settle the mxt down a little bit. After a few minutes I would get silly vdi readings for what i was digging. I have also been digging tons of pull tabs but have yet to find any nickels with it. I am finding dimes, pennies and quarters. I was on a school campus yesterday in peoria where I found lots of pennies. Maybe I just need to take the M6 with me to see if it acts the same way with the 5.3 coil on it.

Any ideas?

Larry if you have time soon, I might let you have a run with this unit in the park to see if I am doing something wrong.

Give me a call and I will check it out. I should be home on and off all day today. I wouldn't think the coil is bad but that is a possibility.
