VDI machine

twotap

New member
I am Tesoro fan to the end but do find my curiosity aroused about VDI machines. I may just give one a try. Any suggestions?

Haha. Funny, I've been doing just the opposite. Been leaving my vdi machines in the car, and using my Tesoro 90% of the time.

I just got a vaquero after about 2 yrs of a tesoro absence, just felt like I was missing alot of good stuff "overusing" my vdi that's why I wanted to get back to beep and dig. I much prefer knobs so I'll always have my m6 as a vdi machine.

I would at least give the DeLeon a try. You would still have Tesoro characteristics you're familiar with. FYI, I found a 14k gold ring that hit FOIL and a low ID of 15 with my MX5. Just sayin'.

How about a Fisher F5? Give me some input on this machine. This looks like it has both covered.
i was looking at that F5 for my first detector until i learned about tesoro and bought the vaquero which has been a good machine. i have been eyeing the xp deus. i may be wrong but, you should be looking to spend a grand at least for a decent vdi unit. have read good and bad with the cheaper ones. the ones over like $1200 seem to be the ones that most are happy with. dont know what all the hype is with those garrett at-pro's though. hunt with people who use them, i have tried them a few times. other than being waterproof, well sometimes. i will keep the vaquero. that marko racer and nokta fors core look decent though for under a grand. read some unlikable things about the F5 display screen going bad.

Since I've gone to VDI detectors my ring finds have quadrupled. I only dig a narrow range of numbers but boy does it work. I found 32 gold rings last year ...not interested in change or silver coins....you need a bucket full to equal the same value as a gold ring...and to top it off lots of the jewelry and rings have diamonds. Almost all of them found nowhere near beaches!! But mainly in trashy fields and parks.NO ID detector and you will have No idea at all what the targets are. It's those little hints on the meter that spell success. I tried the Deleon not bad, but it only works well in mild ground the Cortez only marginally better. You need a powerful.... ground balance adjustable, high freq machine to get the job done. The book "Taking a Closer look at Metal Detector Discrimination" by Robert C. Brockett will amaze you and it is relevant for all detector types and brands. This cheap $10.00 booklet is worth it's weight in GOLD!!!!! Good luck and specialize in digging for gold....leave the rest for amatuers!!!

I have the Deleon, the Fisher F5, and the Mine lab 705. I love them all. The Deleon loves coins, but is a bit too sensitive to EMI. The F5 is great, stable, and allows you to slide right up to fences and the like. It can take some getting used to though, and has been around a long time. The 705 is easier to use, stable, and just change the coil, and you have a new frequency. That is the rub though, buying a new coil. That can hit 150-200 each. Very good machine though.

Hope the gives you some insights. I know many people love their $1200 machines, but I don't think that you need to spend that. Even the Fisher F75 is less than that.

Your reply has left me wondering what VDI MACHINE HAS SCORED ALL THAT GOLD BLING. And what your trick is to using the VDI as to pass the target and move on or dig the target ? Thanks

I would suggest a Fisher F44 or even a LRP (like mine). Both are basically the same detector with a few different options.

You wouldn't spend a lot of money, and could see if TID fits your style. I had a Deleon and like my LRP better, since it has ground balance and costs less and is a little deeper.

Just my thoughts.

Just skip all the bs and get the CTX. I would keep your non- VDI Tesoros for when you want to have "Funtime" without worrying about programs, patterns, which tone, blah blah blah etc.

A Nokta or Makro will probably be the most "analogish" VDI machine you are gonna find. The audio is a little more talkative than other brands. I have a Nokta Fors Core and like it alongside my Tesoros.

Thing about the Fors Core and the Racer is the VDI sucks in modern trash. So you are best off to just hunt by tones anyways. So basically its like hunting with a multi tone Tesoro to me. I dig it. Try one out.

Thanks for the reply's. I went ahead and ordered a Teknetics Eurotek pro to give that type detector a try. Interesting 3 tone responses in the old lumber camp. So far a few old lead bullets and some spent cartridge cases, wont be trading my Tesoros anytime soon.

I like my Toltec 100, probably the best target id machine I have ever operated. It could be too old circa (1987) and heavy (4 lbs) for most hunters but she is a dandy. I own 2 of them and they ain't for sale...lol

Me, too! The way I do it is to notch out tabs only, leaving foil and nickel segments- and this only in high trash areas. Most of the rings in my area hit in the foil/nickel or screwcap area. But I'm always open to anything.
