VCO Pinpointing and rod compatibility

In my research prior to dropping over $1000 for an Explorer SE, I read the online product manual cover to cover. I'd like to get a couple of clarifications. I appreciate any information those of you with experience on the machine can provide regarding:

1)VCO pinpointing - Manual didn't say a lot about it - it still showed basically the old "X over the target" maneuver. When I think of VCO pinpointing (like on the DFX and Fishers I have used) it's absolutely accurate to a central spot on the coil. Is that the way it works on the SE? Is there a point on the coil by which you can use the VCO to determine exactly where the target is in relation to that point?

2)XS lower rods - can they be used on the SE? I know it won't look 'cool' but that's never been a huge concern of mine - otherwise I probably wouldn't even be swinging a detector. :lmfao:

Unlike the XS coil which had a little nub on it that I used to use as a central reference, the SE coil only has a Minelab logo which unfortunately is bigger, but it's in the center of the coil.

The pinpoint mode works the same on the SE as on the XS, it's just that the SE has that terrible modulated sound - I almost can't stand listening to it. They say it's better on the deeper hits, but the sqeal it makes on the shallow and mid targets is truly aweful. I also find it more difficult to detune than the XS.

I am currently using my lower rod from my XS because it has the X-1 on it. It seems to fit fine and the X-1 also works on the SE without a hitch.

Erik, you most have a different SE then me, because my pinpoint mode is VCO, the XS i had did not have this. To me they are way different. Also what brand headphones are you using? I'm using the SunRay Gold, and they don't make a terrible modulated sound. Just wondering. Could you put a picture of your detector with the X-1 mounted on the lower rod, i never seen that before.

Jerry,

Sorry for the confusion - as James pointed out (thanks James!) that was a typo - I meant UPPER rod - I am using my old upper rod with the X-1 on it with the SE.

Regarding the pinpoint, yes the pinpoint on the SE sounds differently (VCO), but you need to apply it the same way as before where you physically need to move 90 degrees to complete the X. It seems that the signal now is stronger, but I can't stand the sound.

I am using the Grey Ghost NDT headphone, I may have to switch over to the Sun-Ray because of the limitter.

Right on Erik, when you said lower shaft, i had to ask. I have seen people do some weird things with detectors trying to modify them. Thanks for your reply.
