Vaquero Woods Hunt

A good day in the woods Sun. Saw some strange sights and managed another Indian, a featureless brown nickel and a hunter's pocket spill consisting of a '44 Washington, '51 Rosie and a '44 Wheatie. Also found some legs off a pewter or lead statue.

Was using a NEL Tornado coil. So far I like it. Will try to post up a review after I've had more time with it.

Way to go on the silver! :thumbup:Wood hunts are fun, but not during the Summertime around here. Too many ticks, mosquitoes and poisonous snakes for my liking.

Looks like you had a great time. Would love to hear more about the new coil. Two silver coins in one hunt is a good day anymore.

Tabman, we certainly have the ticks and mosquitoes, but fortunately no poisonous snakes. We have to worry more about the armed pot growers and meth-heads around here

Kansa54,in air tests that tornado coil was giving me only about an inch to an inch and a half more depth over the stock coil on silver and clad. Copper, though, is a completely different story. For some reason this coil just loves copper and smacks it hard! I was getting 2 to 2 and a half inches more depth on Indians and copper pennies and 3 and a half more inches on a large cent.

Aside from air tests, the in-the-ground performance is pretty impressive. With my stock coil I'd hunted my yard down to the last beep, and the first time with this coil I uncovered a very deep wheatie which gave a clear, repeatable signal. It also pulled an Indian out of a farm house yard that I'd gridded a half dozen times or more previously. I like the coverage pattern too. It covers quite a lot of real estate with every sweep. Also, very small nails and bits of iron are quieter with this coil. You still get some clicks and chirps from them, but less so than with the stock coil.

On the negative side, it's more sensitive to EMI than the stock coil. I was standing under the electrical wire that goes from the house to the garage and I couldn't ground balance the thing. All metal was messed up - modulating up and down without moving the coil. I thought the thing was broken, but as soon as I moved out from under the wire, it was fine again. It never did that before with the stock coil. Also, this coil unfortunately loves bottle caps. I can't for the life of me tell the difference between a bottle cap and coin signal when using this coil, although I have hearing damage and someone with sharper ears might be able to tell the difference.

So far, though, the positives far outweigh the negatives. I'm definitely keeping the NEL.

I've heard they weigh alot more. Also, is it hard to pinpoint your target. With the stock coil I am usually right on target when I pinpoint.

Kansa54, the Tornado does weigh more than the stock coil and it is noticeable by the end of the day. With the lightness of the Vaquero, though, it's not too burdensome.

Pinpointing, as with any big DD coil, is harder, but it doesn't take long to get used to. I rapidly criss-cross over the target in discriminate mode while moving the coil forward and back. Eventually you can tell when the target is either under the toe, heel or dead center. I agree about the stock coil though. Best pinpointing coil I've ever used. All the Tesoro coils are great.

The Tornado is going to be my open woods and farm field coil. Hoping it will find some old coppers for me.

Thanks for all the great info. square nail. I'm thinking of getting one for my vaquero to relic hunt a couple of fields that I have been hitting hard for alot of yrs.
One more quick question. Is it a lot of work to change out coils ? I really like the stock coil.

Id like to have seen the whole statue. Funny , but recently I found a statue with the base missing .

i have found my best stuff in the woods with the vaquero. my first silver coin, a few unfired bullets and lots of casings too.

Was there any rhyme or reason to the spot you were hunting? Or did you just pick a spot and go hunt?

Kansa54, changing the coil is easy. It came with its own bolt and fit well on the Tesoro lower rod.

Wheatymike, I used to deer hunt these woods long before I took up metal detecting. I remembered seeing all the stone walls and stumbling across a couple cellar holes. Most of the places I metal detect I learned about from hunting and fishing.
