Vaquero with a 5.75'' coil hotter than a compadre on gold?

DetectorOCD

New member
Hey guys,
I'm looking at a Vaq and I was wondering.. Since the V is higher frequency than the Compadre, will it hit harder on gold with the 5.75'' coil than the Compadre will with its 5.75?

Thanks!

Hello. I have wondered the same thing as you. I have heard the many accilades about the Compadre being very good on gold. I have really wanted to try one. I do have a Vaquero, and I run the 5.75" coil pretty much all the time. And I do have to admit that it is a very good machine for small gold. It is comparable in that respect to my older Golden Sabre Plus unit, which I know like the back of my hand. I have had the Vaq for about a year now, and I have gotten some really nice jewelry with it. I have learned though, that you have to run the disc control somewhere between "All metal" and the "iron" level - but not above that - for good small gold finding performance. In sand areas (tot lots) I will often run it in all metal mode so that I can find the smallest targets, like earring backs and thin chains, pendants, etc. However, most of the time, I can't tolerate the all metal mode for searching just because of the amount of trash targets that abound. I have heard that the Compadre practically runs in all metal mode (but in silent search mode) at its lowest setting - and this could be one reason why it is so darn good on small, thin gold. All in all, I'm quite happy with my Vaquero in the gold dept. I would love to try a Compadre but with my detector arsenal currently at 10 machines, I can't take any more right now.

I know I will be showing my lack of expeience but do you run the concentric or widescan 5.75"? I see a lot of folks that have the Vaqueros and own both.
Thanks
