VAQUERO WINS OUT:jump:

C.J.M.

Well-known member
Well the battle between The Outlaw & The Vaquero is over chose the Vaquero after seeing lots of youtube videos on both detectors.Maybe you guys have had this problem that I saw and that was guys having the same problem with the "Retune" button plus the fact that the vaquero was really deep when you super-tune it.I did not know that you could do that with a vaquero, except for the Cibola.Has anyone used a Sef.coil on a Vaquero? Not many coils out there for certain Tesoros,Appreciate any feed back you have.:thumbup:cjm

Don't worry about more coils right now. Bet your looking at that big sef coil, right? Don't get crazy about super tuning now either, just learn it the normal way. After awhile when you have started getting decent with it, then try the cosmic settings. I have tried them and prefer to just run it normal. It's deep enough and manual ground balance is to balance it, not to unbalance it. I have tried it all with and running the way it is meant works great. I suggest staying with the Tesoro made coils also. Won't take long to learn it. Read the instruction manual fully, especially the set up and air test part. Good luck to you, you chose a great detector. Oh, the online book, Mastering the Tesoro Vaquero and Tejon Metal Detector, is well worth the $9.99 also. Sent you a message on here too.

Nah----You don't want to super tune the V.----Just do an accurate g.b.--then back the gb off about 1/3rd of a turn (simple)---turns the V into a monster for depth.------Can't help ya on the SEF coils on the Vaquero.----The Tesoro 9X8 & 5.75 concentrics are fine coils--get good depth for their size & work iron well at the same time.

Agreed, 100%

I have the 5.75 inch conc. but I use the stock coil most of the time .I also super tune it often , especially when hunting in the woods where getting the coil next to the ground is difficult .

What I would do to begin with is instead of buying an Outlaw, I would buy a Bandido II Umax (the same detector).

Outlaw is a great detector, and I've never had any "problem" with the retune. Some are just too lazy (!) to push it again after using it to pinpoint... How hard can that be? Sort of as tough as using your turn signal, I guess...

Nothing wrong with a Vaquero; I have a couple hundred hours on one, and I used to like it so much, I had it converted to a high-tone. I still like it...
...But, for where and how I like to go detecting... Outlaw all day, thanks. Bandido II μMAX is also awesome, but sadly, you can't get 'em new with warranty.
Both my Outlaw with an 8" donut and the Bandido II μMAX w/ 5.75" go with on most every trip, unless I just want a reminder of how the other Tesoros work... They're all fine, just not all my favorites. ^_^

Well done on your new detecting,my 'personal' opinion is that i think you have made the right decision, the journey on learning it has just begun,a new machine in theory need a minimum of say a 100 hours to learn the basics of how it performs, regarding looking for another coil when you have only just bought the machine in my mind is crazy, learn it with the coil that came with the machine.

Then once you are familiar with how the detector performs then if you have a special need for another coil then once again take your time in see what is available rather than like most folks do and buy the biggest 1st coil that they see,not sure of what type of detecting you don and the sites that you hunt on,but 'bigger' is not always better.I must admit i do rather like SEF coils, but i dont use them on a Tesoro or a UK Tesoro based machine that i use.I have about 4 or 5 SEF coils that i use on other brand machines ranging from the 8x6 upto the 15x12 and have been using them for a few yaers without any problems what so ever, the 15x12 on the T2 i must admit is possibly one of my favourite combinations on deep pasture and does punch deep, but totally rubbish on trashy sites.

On my UK Vaquero mine comes as standard with both fixed GB and also manual GB,it all depends on how folks want to use the Vaq on that day,its nice sometimes if i want say a quick hunt on then i just flick it into fixed mode, but for best results manual GB is always the best way.

I dont run the Vaquero neg to get more depth . . It falses to much in soil around here , a little neg is all right . I crank the sens way up .

Pinenut-----Any special reason why you use the 8" coil on the Outlaw & the 5.75" on the Bandito 2 micromax (instead of vice versa)?-----Just curious---I have the Bandito 2 micromax but not the Outlaw.

No special reason. Those are just my two favorite detectors, and my two favorite coils.
I could put any of my concentrics on either one and find plenty, but in cleaner spots I like the 8", so I grab the Outlaw with that coil already on it. ^_^

Same here, when using Vaquero. I set GB slightly negative in all-metal, threshold at the lowest hum I can hear, and sensitivity as high as possible without constant chirping. If checking GB in disc mode for a "power balance", I may be able to go slightly more negative, but a touch too far and my Vaquero gets too chatty. If you run too positive on GB, you will lose depth.

I really do like using my Vaquero, but find the ED120 Tesoros much more pleasant in trashy spots, where they tend to run quieter and have similar depth with the smaller coils I like.
