Vaquero vs. modded Cibola

Let me start by saying that I AM aware that any mods done to Tesoro detectors will void the warranty .....

For those of you who have bought Cibola's and modified them to include a ground balance , and for the same group of people , I am wondering if you had a Vaquero at the same time ? ........ If so , what was the comparison like ? ........ I'm quite sure that there are different chips in the 2 detectors and was wondering how much of a difference there was between the 2 detectors ........Please reply if you have owned them at different times also ..... Trying to understand any differences before I purchase one or the other .....Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim,

I have not owned either machine, but I have read several posts on various forums of folks who have owned both, with the Cibola being modded. Every one of them (Im recalling there were 3-4 of them total) have said the modded Cibola was deeper by a few inches. One guy said the Cibloa's Disc worked better while supertuned than the Vaq, but that was one's guy's experience. So its a small sample size, but Im thinking the modded Cibola would be the choice if you're going to buy a used machine.

Ive been thinking on getting a modded Cibola but Im waiting to see what Tesoro's new offering will be before I pull the trigger.

mojotrout ,

Thanks for the info ......It will be interesting to see what Tesoro comes out with for it's next detector ......I'll probably look for a used Cibola in good shape if the price is right and do the mod....Thanks again ....Jim

Here is a video that bigjon posted a couple months ago. The fellow talking on the video in KeithSouthern. He a very knowledgeable detectorist. In the video he is using the Cibola but if you listen to the end he comments on the Vaquero too. This video also shows how to "Power Balance" a Tesoro to get the most out of manual ground balanceing.

"Power Balance" is the brainchild of "Monte" - thanks Monte.

I have had 3 stock Cibolas and currently have 2 Vaqueros. I personally wouldn't mod a Cibola just for the sake of adding ground balance, although I may make a liar of myself in the future. But either machine is a winner.

My experience is that the Cibola may not be any deeper than the V. Biggest difference I saw the Cibola ran smoother, sort of calm and collective, where the V was like someone on caffeine who talks too much. Maybe not that bad but, you get the idea.

The Cibola seems to be Tesoros dog machine. When most look for a Tesoro, they pass right on by the Cibola.
Too bad because they are a pretty good machine overall. With a bit of help, they can be an excellent machine.
You could have picked them up used cheaper than a new Silver Umax. But, since everyone now wants one to mod................

By the way, it's one hot Tot-Lot machine with the 5.75" coil.

I enjoyed your vedio. You are right on about that you dont need a high dollar detector if you know how to set up the one you use.. Great job and thank you... KEN , IND.

Word of caution Jim:

Be very careful with the mod if you try one, prior electronic repair experience will go a long way toward success. There are some very delicate wires that break easy and other pitfalls if you are not very careful or use the wrong tools. Otherwise, an easy and rewarding mod to do. I think Tesoro would be wise to make the modded Cibola their new detector with all the interest in them... I don't use mine very often but it is a sweet detector.

Switching from a pushbutton to toggle on the all metal is a great little mod also.

Anyone here on the forum perform these kinda mods?

Thanks guys ....I appreciate the info ......

Sven,
I think that I still have the mod info tucked away somewhere that I got from you a couple years back ....Thanks, Jim

Larry ,
I"ll get back to you ....Have been swamped with work lately ...Thanks, Jim

Bleaver,
I'm in touch with Keith S. from time to time .....yes , a well versed detectorist !!.....JIm
