Vaquero ver Golden u-Max ...

Willee - Texas

Well-known member
What do you think?
Will the Golden u-Max hold its own against the mighty Vaquero?

As with any brand, in neutral or good ground pretty close. But I think the Vaq will always hold the edge as far as depth is concerned. Since I'm not a depth fan, so to speak, I would have to have the Golden as I need the extra info given by the sounds. I'm not a serious hunter, and FUN is what I'm after. My Royal Sabre is similar to the Golden in some respects and I just couldn't sell it after 15 years for this reason. If I could get over my laziness and into research and yadda yadda I would surely want the Vaquero.

The Vaq is way deeper, but it doesn't have the tones that are so helpful.

Im not a serious hunter either Slingshot, if Im not enjoying myself, if it seems like alot of work, I will walk away from it, put down my detector and go for a swim or bikeride or whatever.

Well i have both, and like them alot the golden is the one machine that i've found more coins than any other that i've had it's a great park machine then i use my vaquero for the old home steads and the more difficult terrain, had the tejon to but was quite never satified with the result for my hunts did very well if your into relics but coins i struggled to get'em and that i like the lightness of my vaquero better, now if the vaq had tones the it would be one hot weapon

Or better yet, a dual frequency,3 tone ID Vaq that's waterproof !

I know...the waterproof thing took it over the edge.

I've been using the Vaq for a year now and really like it. It does so much quite well, parks, plantation hunts, beaches(wet and dry). Just picked up a used Golden 2 weeks ago, I like the tones but will need some time to figure out the tones combine or roll into each other, The notch isn't hard to figure out, but still experimenting where I need to set it for different conditions. I'll post more on the Golden after more time. I can tell you the V will get deeper on the bench or in the dirt from what I've seen so far..

I kinda thought the Vaq would be the deepest seeker of the two.
Too bad you must give up depth to get some ID.

Perhaps someday the Tesoro engineers will figure out a way to get both ... full depth and ID.

Got a new Golden on the way to add to my arsenal of detectors and am looking forward to using it as a dry sand hunter at the beach.

Thanks again for all the tips about the way the 4 tones respond to different targets.

I don't have a vaq. But use a cibola. After some hardcore use I find that it does have tone id you just have to listen to what its telling you. combining the tones and thumbing the disc knob you can get quite skilled at identifying your target. you can easily tell iron from the crackles in the tone. bottle caps give a loud crackle as well. My cibola has been an awesome unit and feel no need to change over to any other machine anytime soon. I think most people don't invest enough time learning their md. In this hobby patience patience patience in your hunts and listening to what you electronic buddy is telling you. Be patient and he will tell you the truth!!!!!
