Vaquero...to the rescue!

Saw an ad on CL this afternoon. A gentleman was looking for someone with a detector to help him find his lost hearingaid. I called and asked if anyone had come to help and he said no.
My wife and jumped in the car with the V and drove to the opposite side of town.
When we arrived we introduced ourselves to the gent and his wife and got the lowdown on what happened. I asked if he had another of the same type so I could run the V over it see where to set disc so we could try to find just it. It wouldn't register in disc, only AM. Not a strong signal, but very distinctive.
We walked down the road to where he thought it popped out of his ear. This man had HAND CUT the tall grass in an area about 10x20 feet. He said he spent almost 8 hours on his hands and knees the day before searching for this hearing aid.
I searched this area, hard. My wife eyeballed the area and the outskirts. This is at the end of a dead end street where the kids party. You know what that means.
After about 15-20 minutes I asked him to set his other aid down so I could focus on that sound again. Then I started in the tall grass, outside the area where he thought he lost it. In amongst the junk, was THAT sound. I carefully parted the grass and there it was!
I don't think I've ever seen 2 happier folks.
The mans wife told him to go get $100 off the dresser, but I told him I couldn't do it. Trying to build up Karma, etc.
I told them no at least twice more and tried to get in the car. At that point his wife hands him $100 and 2 gift cards for $50 and $25. He tells me to either take the cash or gift cards,PLEASE. Says I saved his life. The aid was $2500, 5000 for the pair and he would appreciate it I'd I took the reward. So I took the cash.
Now I feel guilty. These folks live in an expensive home in a nice neighborhood. They aren't hurting for money.
Was I wrong?

That's great. It was honorable to turn down the reward. But I see their point... $100 is well worth it since they would have been out $2500. Accept their appreciation without regret. A job well done!

I did this once with reward money.. Take them out to dinner with you... On You ( The reward money)... Ask if they know any places you can detect...while eating dinner.

That way you feel good. Make new friends and have a nice meal for your thank you...

I don't think there's anything to feel guilty about u did a good thing and the reward was pushed on u it was obviously important to them that u took the money. I bet they feel great about the experience and u should too. congrats on a great and challenging find good job :)

Nice story and a good deed. You got yourself several brownie points and a gold star.

They were just overwhelmed with your kindness and would have felt guilty if they didn't give you something in return.

If giving you a reward made them feel better, taking it was a good thing as well.

Great deed. If you could go back and do it over. Maybe I would suggest saying instead of a cash reward (especially if they were as persistent as you made them sound) they provide you with the opportunity to hunt their property. Personally I would like the chance to detect more than I would like the cash. I really like the suggestion on taking them out to eat. That is the best idea I have heard.

Only if you did not find it and they where poor, Good job on your part dealing with the situation, thats cool you diserve every penny your detector is not cheep or you gas or time . a worker is worth of his wages hay why should the preacher john hagge get 1.5 million a year and not have to pay taxes, and you fuss over 100.00 get strait man you deserv every penny . and you think you did wrong . and hagge thinks he is doing right this is mind boggling.

Its not that I feel I did wrong, just guilty. I had no intention of taking the money when I went to help. I like Elton's idea also. I may ponder that a bit.
The house was newish in a newish hood, trust me, if it had been 100 years old I would have jumped at that chance.

I had a similar situation this Spring. I found a hearing aid at the beach in NC. When I got home, I tried finding something about it, but could not find anything online except the cost. I called a hearing aid place and gave them the serial number. She tracked down the serial number to a hearing aid store in PA who found the owner, but due to the privacy laws they couldn't put me in contact with him. The hearing aid place in NC that I contacted, sent it back to York, PA (with my contact information), where it was lost for awhile due to problems with a staff member who was fired. They eventually returned it to the owner who was excited about it; however, he never contacted me or thanked me. Kind of disappointing, but at least he got his hearing aid back.

Beautiful story and funny how this detecting opens up a whole other dilemma for us...You did the right thing, refused the reward offer several times, as you were brought up to do...and HE did the right thing, by not taking your refusal and paying you for your time and talent, as he was brought up to do...if the "giver" is that persistent, you have no choice but to graciously accept, or else you just robbed him of being square with the World in his mind..good job!

The look on this mans face was truly a reward for me. I thought he was going to cry. He put the aid back in and told his wife "It works!."
Thank you for the kind words, everyone.

Also important to this story is checking out CL for where things can be lost...even if you cant get over there and search, it still is a good learning tool as to where things get lost.
