The pinpoint feature won't work in that mode, but not everybody uses it.
It can possibly get you deeper, or at least get you some clearer signals on the deeper ones, but the ability to tell depth by listening to the volume of the tone also goes away.
In regular settings with the thresh set at a barely heard hum the depth on targets shallow and deep is different.
In some soils it could work well, in others supertuning might not be any advantage or might even get you less depth.
In really heavy iron I have done way better not using supertune.
I have used both in really great soil and in heavy mineralized SE. dirt with extra iron.
I used to use only supertune here in the south but only remember getting a few signals I couldn't with regular settings.
In good soil regular settings got me very deep so I didn't supertune much.
I came back to the south after that and don't pull the Vaq out much but when I do I prefer to not supertune and still find stuff pretty deep.
Just try both on your targets in your soil and see what's what.

I turn the sens up as high as I can but keep the threshold low enough to still use the pinpoint button . The machine will go much deeper with that sens cranked up .For a long time I thought I had a dud Vaquero because I couldnt get the depth that other's were getting on videos . Then I simply set the sensitivity at the end of the red instead of at 10 where I usually ran it and it went much deeper .
There are places I cant run it that high . Ground with a lot of cinders I have to run it with the sensitivity ran low .

I noticed when you crank everything up, seems to throw the disc way off. It will hit hard on a small bit of iron that usually would not get or break up on. I agree with Hatpin though, just crank up the sensitivity where you can. But, burying the threshold and sensitivity, to myself anyhow, is a pain with false signals and hitting small bits of junk. Start off using it normally and learn it that way first. You will find it works just fine. Then experiment with the other settings.
When I hunt with my Vaq I turn the sense all the way up to max and back it off till it stops chirping usually somewhere about 3\4 into the red. Threshold set at about 1 oclock. Just barely a hum. Find a deep target that is real feint to the ear and turn the GB negative a little till it starts to come in clearer. I dug an 8in buffalo a couple a days ago in my crap soil hear in colorado. That's pretty deep for my soil. Vaq will get a lot deeper in non minerized ground with them settings.
I do own and use a Vaquero and mine came from the factory with the manual/auto GB facility,for me its all about a detector running smoothly and not cranking all the setting upto maximum,i would rather run a detector at slightly less depth if it ran stable than running it flat out and it becoming erratic.
Mainly use it with a smaller 5.75'' Concentric coil on and it really excels on really trash roman sites and in between the stubble rows when the crops come,i still cannot get over how light this detector is,mine does not run a single 9v battery but has the Tejon 12v battery compartment so it has a longer run time.
I would be more incline too run it in 'non supertune mode' till you get the hang of the machine,then once you understand what it is telling you then start experimenting with Super Tuning it.
A nice christmas present for sure and well done.
