Vaquero relic hunt

I took my Vaquero out yesterday for a 3 hr. hunt in not so good conditions. The field was wheat stubble that had been chiseled and was real clumpy with a lot of stubble and grass. I did find some good artifacts though, a couple of complete iron pts., main spring from a muzzle loader, pewter button, and a piece of an iron kettle that still had one leg attached.
I started to wear down after about an hr. of hunting because I was digging, what I consider to be very deep targets. One of the iron pts. was dug at 10 inches. The main spring was dug at about the same depth and I was still getting a strong signal after retrieving it. I dug down to about 16 in. and finally just gave up. Probably left the rest of the gun in the hole. Man, the Vaquero will give you a workout.
One thing I noticed was that when super tuned it seems to go way deeper than the all metal. Also, the pin pointer is virtually useless. With that being said, I still believe it is going to be an awesome relic machine.

Get a bigger shovel. :)

You got that right Tabman. Very few times have I felt the need for a bigger shovel but will definately carry one the next time out with the Vaq.

I hear you on that digging it uses up your calories fast , when the stuff is 10" deep and clay is in the ground .

I remember once on the beach at night myself and a couple of friends kept getting a signal in a hole... but no goodies... We dug that thing almost 5 feet deep before we gave up and cursed that metal detector for all it was worth. Took 2 people to get a guy out of that hole...
The magnetic sand was driving the detector crazy I suppose.

Yep the Vaq is a deep unit next to the Tejon and you are absolutely correct when supertuned the Pinpoint is totally useless I traded mine for some older Tesoro Units and may regret it later . But I did dig some target holes at over 15 inches deep and never found the target but kept hitting a strong signal over the center of the hole gave up once and then the next time it did this I kept digging and finally dug up a ax head at over 22 inches

Wow Barry, an axe head at 22 inches! I would love to dig an Indian trade axe or rifle at any depth. The site I'm searching has that potential and apparently my Vaquero does too.

Just for my info, what settings were you using on this hunt? I swing a Vaq myself and have begun to lean more toward relic hunting than just coin shooting. Also I would like to know your results with the Discrim control as I cannot really ever discrim out iron objects. I haven't tried nails lately but I dig alot of iron stuf with the Discrim control on 1st mark below 5 cents.

I'm probably not a good one to answer your questions. The site I am searching, I set my disc. right above all metal mode. I want to dig most iron signals, just not small pieces of wire.
I have hunted an old farm site a couple of times this year and had good luck with disc setting below nickel and sensitivity at 9. This site is loaded with iron but I thought the Vaq did a great job.
