vaquero questions

Hey there vaquero owners just had some questions as where a qauter for instance air tests at with a full charged battery and in discriminate mode just trying to find out if there is something wrong with mine or if this is nature of the beast? mine with the 9 x 8 coil only gets maybe 8" to 10" with a qauter i figuired it would do way bettter than this and the ground balance i have to go to 9:00 clock position before its balancedis this right? if i have to ship it out to the factory to get it super tuned i will i love the looks of this machine

The ground balance is multi-turn. I doesn't have stops so 9:00 doesn't really mean a lot. The ground balance pot is 3 3/4 turn pot. so turn it one way a full 4 turns, then turn it back 2 turns and you are close to center.

For air tests, I'd turn the discrimination knob to iron and turn the sensitivity into the red zone or all the way if it doesn't chatter a lot. I can't air test all of my detectors inside. Some just chatter away so I need to put a big cardboard box outside to set the detector on.

Try all metal and see what you get.

Sven has posted Cibola air tests on his web page (there is a link in his signature block). He uses a number of different settings. Vaquero should be similar. With sensitivity at 6 he gets 6 inches on a quarter. With sensitivity maxed, he gets between 10 and 11.5 inches depending on where the threshold is set. My Cibola matches his measurements.

Check your settings and see what you get. If your sensitivity is maxed, discriminate at iron and threshold is up, 8 inches may be a little low. Check to make sure you aren't testing near other metal objects or sources of interference. If in doubt, you could send it in for a check up.

hey there tvr thanks for the advice and have tried this in all metal mode now with the threshhold it works very well there is no complaints, but in disc mode at the iron level it will do 10" but the audio is very faint

Still got the Golden? How does it test on a quarter with discrimination, threshold and sensitivity set similar to the Vaquero settings?

hey there tvr, yup still got the golden, have'nt tried the the the quater thing yet but have been experimenting with different pull tabs to see which one i can knock out and keep nickels, as far as the vaq is concerned i'm going to ship it off just so i know it will have a clean bill of health when i recieve it back, just got to call the company to see what it going to cost for a super tune

I would say that is typical of the Vaquero. Mine also hits harder in discriminate mode. The faint audio at 10 inches in all metal is why some like to hunt in all metal in clean ground. You can tell more about the depth and what is there, but hunting with a threshold used batteries a little faster also. Bill in Texas

I guess my problem is i'm so used to my silver and that with the 12 x 10 coil on it a qauter will ring out nice and loud at 12" and thats no bull but i got the vaq for bad ground situations so maybe i'm jumping the gun and i found on my golden that 8" brown donut seems to work better than the 9" x 8" coil go figuire? and i got a compadre just because of the frequency, supposedly its really good on fine gold chains and jewelry.

I have a Silver also. I don't believe that the V will read any deeper in the air, but it sure will in the ground most of the time. You have to super tune (see owners manual) to get the maximum depth from the V. When properly ground balanced and super tuned, my V blows my silver away in most ground conditions. That is especially true in the beach sand imported for Volleyball courts here or in some of our gray dirt. Bill in Texas

well thats sort of the idea I had in mind but my ground up here for most part is stable for auto ground balanced machines but i got the vaq just in case, ireally love the looks of the vaq!

Hi from the UK.Just got a Vaquero and wondered how it performs on wet and black sand. What sort of settings would you use.Great forum,thanks.Mick.
