Vaquero Question

I understand that the Vaquero shares some of the circuitry of the Lobo supertrack. Does that mean the Lobo also has the HOT technology. I'm considering buying a Vaquero for nugget shooting and all around detecting. I had one tesoro dealer and very experienced nugget hunter tell me he felt the Vaquero was very sensitive on gold nuggets and perhaps even better than the Lobo. Any opinions?

Jerry...
For nugget hunting go with the Lobo ST. For all around detecting go with the Vaquero. Neither one is good at what the other one does well. I can make the LST relic hunt but I will spend too much time chasing tiny targets and not find the deeper targets. I can make the Vaquero nugget hunt if I am willing to give up the tiniest nuggets. Neither would be acceptable to me. SAVE UP!!!..as Killer Beaz would say and get em both....
We are a Tesoro dealer exclusively and will tell it like it is....

Won't Work Perfectly everywhere, but you will find some nice gold, if this were something I was going to do, I would get the 5.75 and the 7" concentric elliptical to go along with the stock coil....Take a look the the finds the Relic hunters are posting, small caliber round balls, Buck balls, small buttons, silver coins etc all non ferrous targets, that should give ou a clue right there. A few years ago I found some small gold nuggets in an old dozer cut with a MM Bandido 2 stock 8" coil and they are shown in the glove in the picture....Having said this I have been chasing gold for most of my life and have used a lot of different detectors in the process, some good, some bad, These new units from the manufacturers do fairly well in the nugget patches, For the most part I use an expensive PI but since I am near old camps when nugget hunting, I have several detectors with me, so I can hunt for everything in the area.. Oct 2003 I found a very small, Rare, 1/4 gold Celtic Stater, last summer using the 10x12 DD on my "T" I found several nice gold nuggets.....A Detectorist can tune his unit to get the job done.....Hh...Geo

Seeker and Mayor, thanks for your response. Been slow at work latley so can't get both. I do think a Vaquero is in my future.

This is what one dealer said about vaquero
The new Tesoro Vaquero! We are pretty excited at Alaska Mining & Diving Supply about the new Vaquero metal detector from Tesoro. Why? Because our nugget detecting experts have looked at the features and design of the Vaquero and concluded that it has all the makings of a very good entry-level nugget detector. The Vaquero operates in the 14 kHz range, a proven gold-getting frequency. It features a high output transmit oscillator to push the signal deeper and an increased gain for sensitivity to smaller items. The 3-3/4 turn ground balance control allows you to manually tweak the detector for that "just right" ground balance setting. Expert nugget hunters agree that manual ground balancing is preferred for hitting those smallest and deepest nuggets. The threshold based all-metal mode allows you to hear the faintest targets. The 9" x 8" open spoke coil covers the ground well and yet is light in weight. Put this together with the Tesoro "MicroMax" design and you have a detector weighing less than 2.5 pounds!

Here's another
I have not had a chance to take this detector in the field (because the ground is frozen and covered with snow) but playing with it and air testing this detector is able to pick up sub-grain size nuggets very easily, and since this is a manual ground balacne detector I know it can handle harsh ground conditions. This detector can easily cross over from coin and relics to GOLD and do it well.

is a good friend of mine and we discussed this quite a while ago after he saw me use the "T" at Ganes, to make a cheap test for yourself take a small lead shot and see what kind of a hit you get............ HH..Geo

I have an Eldorado and Iowa is about as far from Detectable Gold as you can get. But had heard it was an ok Gold detector.
So like he said I took #7 1/2 lead shot 1 & 5 and glued to two poker chips. with these in your pocket you could air test in the dealers shop.
I found my Eldorado with 7" concentric would pick up the single shot at 2" and 5 at 3-4 " which I did not think bad for such a small target.
Being higher frequency and the Hot Circuitry you should gain some with the Vaquero.
The Vaqero is a good GP machine, I doubt it is realistic to expect it to be as good as purpose built Gold Detector.
But you never know till you try.

Will make the "V" setup work. They will be less affected by the ground matrix and you will get a sharper response to the smaller pieces. When hunting Bedrock with a VLF I use a 6" coil and it has made me a lot of money...This fall I am going back to the UK for a week of hunting and am working on a sidetrip to Scotland to look for gold. I am going to take my "T" and the two smaller coils.. Should be a fun and interesting trip.... HH..Geo

Seeker, if you could just have one small coil for you T Which one would it be. 5 3/4 or 7 inch eliptical. Thanks

Talk about "The Horns of a Dilemma" I would say if I had to choose, it would be the 7" concentric, for the type of hunting I do, that shape would do a better job for me, probably not a dimes worth of difference between the two, but that is just my opinion, for whats its worth, as I have neither right now to try....HH..Geo

I field tested the Vaquero and haven't put it down yet. I've been pulling small cuff buttons (Civil War) out of heavy iron trash (most of them had square nails lying on top of, or underneath) and doing this with the stock 9x8 coil. I agree with Seeker; the 5.75 or 7 ellipt., would be a good choice if your gold shooting, but the 9x8 is very impressive. Good unit, I highly recommend the Vaquero. Good hunting, David @ Dixie
