Vaquero, question?

You guys that have one and use it regularly, can you tell me how deep you have found things with it? Doesn't have to be something valuable. Just something you found and how deep it was. I saw a ytube video and the man could hit a candle stick holder at 15 inches. Does that sound reasonable to you? I am looking to get a backup detector, but i want one thats plenty deep. Relic hunter mostly. Would love to hear your opinions. I have never owned a Tesoro so input is surely needed. Thanks

I have found a three ringer civil war bullet about 14" deep when it was properly tuned.

Yes, the "Four mid-priced metal detector shoot out" video. There are a few factors to depth though. I run mine just normal, not supertuned or the GB way negative and have hit some pretty deep things that surprised me. I dont measure but, deeper than some friends machines can hit the same target. It will go deep supertuned but, you loose a lot of the discrimination. I'd say get one, I have been very pleased with mine over the years. Will not say it's the best unit for a real iron trashy site, there are probably better. But, very few can match it or the Tejon for depth.

In mild soil spots, mine has hit nickels down to about 10". In mineralized soil though....not so deep.

The Vaquero is a great detector. I've got a test garden with a silver dime at 11" and a silver quarter at 12". The Vaquero hit both of these targets with the stock coil, I had it super tuned. Would it hit these targets every day, No.Don't know if it is due to the weather or I didn't have it super tuned right, but I think it was due to the weather because another detector I had would hit them also but just like the Vaquero there were days it would not hit them. First off you will need to learn your detector. I usually only run mine super tuned when I'm in an open field where there is little trash. Tried to run it in a park super tuned but it just about drove me nuts.I would say the deepest thing I've found was a 3" pipe about 18" to 20" deep. After saying all of that, this is in my dirt.

being a relic hunter mostley as you stated the Tejon would serve you better and is really deep

I own both the T2 and the 'hot' UK version of the Vaquero called the Trident 11 Extreme which has the 11x8 WS coil on,so basically the stock coils are identical size wise, this is of course my personal opinion but the Vaquero is not as deep as the T2,if i then put one of my larger NEL coils on the T2 then its game over for the Vaq,the main reason i bought the Tesoro based machine was mainly the weight or lack of weight i should say,i have had wrist problems with my swinging arm so a lighter everyday machine was required,so my 3 main machines of late are the T2,Deus and the Vaquero,if i need the use of a 'heavy hitter' and use big coils then i can only use the detector/coil with a full GPX harness this allows me a full days relic/hoard hunting on some of my sites.

The Vaqueo for the most part is used with either a 5.75'' Tesoro coil or 10x6 Mars Sniper coil and used for what i think it excels at is really trashy roman sites and in between stubble, the discrimination side of the Tesoro with a small coil is about as good as it gets.

One thing i wioll comment on is you are asking folks for depth figure !! on what ?? someone could quote a good depth on a coin size item or someone could also quote you a depth on a cannonball which is of course being bigger will give better depth, just because you have seen a YouTube video that gives a depth on something at 15'' does not mean you will be able too replicate that in your ground conditions ??

If you mainly hunt for deep relics and live in a prime location then you could either get something like a 'BIG Nel coil which is much cheaper than buying a totally new machine,or a very cheap alternative but a very effective way is get say a 'IDX Pro' which can be picked up for peanuts if you hunt around and then buy a new 15'' Concentric coil for it from Whites for not alot and then you will have a phenomenally deep outfit, quote from the Whites official website mention on large targets depths upto 36'' are achievable of course this is all pro rata depending on the size of the target and ideal ground conditions but would it be deeper than say 15'' on a candlestick hunting with a Vaquero !!! i personally would say yes and by a fair margin.

I still think you are not using the T2 too its true depth potential yet, must admit i have never had any problems with depth with mine,a larger coil used correctly on the right ground condition and also the right size targets will succumb to this machine and mine is one of the original green models that does not have boost or any other power feature.

I would say either the Vaq or the Tejon for relic hunting. You can't go wrong with either of them. Get a Tejon, and have the Vaq as a back up :)

Will find coin size objects at 10". Traded mine off & wish I still had it.

I have used one Relic Hunting here in Kentucky and found a lot of relics with it.I have been Metal
detecting for 30 years and I would put it in my top 10 best detectors.I prefer the High Tone model, seems like it gives
It a little extra punch.Very good coin detector also.Just a proven
Performer for me.

I like the info guys. And yes i wasn't talking about a single coin. More on the line of something a little bigger, like a cache.
And i do understand about everybody's ground being different. I think guys that have done this awhile take that into account. I can just about tell you the limits of my t2 because i have test targets at different depths. All the way up to 32 inches. And i have tried it every way under the sun. Don't get me wrong i love it, and it is very deep to me. I can hit some test targets (cache like) at 26 inches. In my ground. Ha
Just wondering about the vaquero after i saw the video. Might go deeper on something a little bigger. Its always better to ask the people here before you buy it and try it. There is a lot of good solid wisdom on here. People that have been there and done it already. I do appreciate your help.

just took my new vaquero black out today. I have the 5.75 concentric on it and dug a couple of wheats around 7". then I dug a 1974 half that was about 4 inches deeper than the 7.5" blade on my lesche shovel. it came out brown and green and I thought it was a large cent at first. couldn't believe that coil could go that deep so I checked the pile of dirt and the plug to see if there was something else. nothing. ive never found anything that deep with my whites v3i or my at pro. the vaquero surprises me every time I go out. last time I was out I found a pa dog license from 1934 that was about 8 or 9 inches.

That is sweet. With the bigger size coils you can put on them, should be impressive depths the way I am thinking. I know that you are using the smaller coil because of trash around in your area. Thanks for sharing.
