Vaquero question

Just got my first detector and it was a Vaquero. I just got permission to hunt on some promising area by Charleston SC. Has anyone used their Vaquero for reilic hunting? If so how does the Vaquero perform? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I can tell you that's its deep enough if you super tune it, I would start out there and set the discrimination somewhere in the lower Iron range. Super tuned will get you the depth, but if the area is one that has lots of those square nails your going to probably dig of lot of them. The Vaquero when its super tuned tends to develop a taste for certain Iron like those rusty rather large square nails.

i run mine with neutral GB, threshold at 2-3 oclock, sense at 10.disc just above iron, sometimes at 10 oclock if nails are real bad. not knocking the supertune thing. i just find it a bit unstable and get false signals. just crank up the threshold to get a bit more depth. with getting the sense well into the red and high threshold is not worth the fuss for a mere inch or two more. whatever you choose to do anyhow, good luck.

Super tuned it does like old iron, but all in all everything I keep comparing it to it holds it own I think for the money it one of the best all purpose detectors on the market. But like with everything what works for you may not work for others, the spice of life.

Thanks for the pointer. Just ordered a nice pin pointer. Was hoping my Vaquero would end up being a decent all around detector.

Dont be afraid to adjust the controls . Super tune it , run it normal. Run it all metal making a hum and run it quiet . Use that red button to hear the target in a different mode .Dig a lot. You will eventually find settings that you like and it may be different than everybody else.

Most of the time I run mine like ^ JLD66 ^ . Its just where I have become comfortable .

For detecting around a bunch nails and iron, I set my discrimination just high enough to discriminate out nails, either neutral or slightly negative on the ground balance and high as I can go on the sensitivity and still be able to run quietly. Most of the time it's full sensitivity where I detect. I think the trick to finding those really deep targets is using a good set of headphones and having your detector running quietly so you can hear those faint audio signals. Killer B Wasp headphones work great with my Vaquero.

For me that's a good starting point and like what was said above, try different settings to see what suits you best. Good Luck!
