this morning in a local park, turned on the vaquero, switched to all metal for ground balancing, threshold not giving out a sound.turned it back to disc, the detector started to chatter real loud.emi maybe, changed the frequency,no help.changed the battery, checked the plugs, earphones, changed the coil.the problems still there.this is the second time this detector has played up.the first time it was sent back to the dealer, who said it was sent back to tesoro, three months later i got it back, fixed.i wonder if it ever left australia.blowfly

If you turn the threshold between 1 and 3 O'clock position does it make any sound in AM? Chatter might just be improper ground balance.

I had some problems with mine for the first couple months, when I pushed the red AM button the detector would shut off and then restart. It healed itself over time with regular use.

no it doesn't make a sound in am with the threshold set in any position.if i now turn it to discrimination it just screams.like it's shorting out or something.blowfly

If your GB control got turned a lot, it it could do that.
Did you try ground balance from scratch?
The only time I've had freak problems like that, it's been a loose coil connection or bad battery.

it appears i have solved the problem.the last few days here have been rather wet and humid,so last night i put the control box in a box filled with silica kitty litter.moisture must have got into the control box.it's working fine now,but i think i'm going to seal the lid with some sort of silicon gel.the lid doesn't fit real well, thinking about it none of my tesoro detector control box faces make a perfect fit.the gaps left there on purpose as air holes maybe?blowfly
