Vaquero pin point button

Herb Jones

New member
Has anyone ever changed the " momentary" pinpont button to an "on/off" button, which would allow running in all metal and switching back to discrim faster without turning knobs... kind of like the Eldorado (original) had the toggle switch. I know you can hold the red button in and release for discrim, but that gets old quickly.

How would you deal with the "retune" or whatever it's called. Where you double press the button quickly to narrow the pinpoint area?

Most detectors are used in the motion Discriminate mode. Most people do not use the All Metal mode for general searches. They only use it when Pinpointing a target using that Threshold function.

With over five decades of detecting there have been, and are, quite a few times I opt to search in an All Metal mode, but the bulk of my searching is in a motion-based Discriminate mode. Personally, I wouldn't mess with a button change on the Vaquero. I have had my anti-Vaquero feelings through the years, for personal design reasons close to what you are referring to, but gladly have on in my personal arsenal now, since it works better for me with a high-tone mode. Also with the 6"Concentric coil mounted for the trashier places I general hunt.

I don't care for the counter-clockwise 'click' position on the Disc. control to have to switch to All Metal mode, then have to re-adjust to a desired rejection setting. However, I took advantage of adding the Vaquero to take advantage of:

• The 14.5 kHz operating frequency being different from other popular Tesoro models.
• The Frequency Shift toggle function should it be needed in a Competition Hunt or some EMI issues.
• The better depth-of-detection over most of the other Tesoro models.

Also, as I thought through things, with that handy Pinpoint push-button like the Silver Sabre microMAX, it gave me the handy grab-and-go hunting 'feeling' but with an 'edge' by being able to quickly adjust the Ground Balance for peak performance in either search mode I would be using, as well as having the option of selecting a Threshold-based All Metal search mode on occasion if desired. So, I added the Vaquero to replace a Silver Sabre microMAX.

But I do not limit myself to only one detector, and if I want to search a site more intentionally using a Threshold-based All Metal mode, I simply grab a model that provides that function as well as a quick mode-change to a Discriminate mode and back. That could be my Tesoro Bandido II microMAX or 'original' Bandido. It could also be a Makro Racer 2, or a Nokta Impact, FORS Relic or FORS CoRe.

If an All Metal search was called for today, my top two models of choice are my Nokta FORS CoRe and Impact. Both excellent, but using the new Impact for some site searches, depending upon the amount and type of metal targets in an area, has the advantage of four different All Metal mode, and two ways to use a traditional All Metal mode, but with the ability to adjust Discrimination in All Metal.

I just appreciate the Vaquero for what it is and how it was designed. I wouldn't want to mess with a Compadre or Silver µMAX, nor a Vaquero for the same reasons. They work well as designed and if a difference is desired, such as a quick mode-shift from All Metal to-and-from Discrimination, just buy a model that was designed that way.

How long have you been detecting? What make/models do you have at the present? What types of hunting do you do and how often do you use a Threshold-based All metal mode?

The Vaquero has a faster auto-tune design and no manual 're tune' as such from a static mode, which it doesn't have. The method for narrowing the audio response when pinpointing is called 'de-tuning', and that is done when you're using a static All Metal or Pinpoint mode. It is touchy due to the auto-tune, but is doable in the Vaquero's Pinpoint function.

When I modified my Cibola to add ground balance control to the front panel (right where the pinpoint button was), I added a toggle switch below the grip where it is right at index finger reach. Middle position is normal hunting in discriminate mode, pull it to pinpoint with a spring release to center it back in discriminate mode or push it to lock in all metal mode.

Like Monte indicates, I too mostly hunt it in discriminate mode and the added feature of locking in all metal is not used a lot. It is sometimes handy, when there is a small iffy target in the pile of dirt, to lock it in all metal with the detector on the ground. Grab a hand of dirt, sweep hand full over the coil, then split it in half, and see which half has the target, then keep doing that until the little target is found. With a pin pointer in hand, I don't do that too much now.

Where I do hunt in mostly all metal mode is at the beach, but then, it is not with this detector.

just an idea,...doesn't mean it was a good one... in
my test bed I seem to get better depth in all metal than
disc. i have an old spanish outpost/ port if
entry site from the early-mid 1700's that is
on a flood plain. though i have swept
it in disc, the targets are few and far between, i was thinking
that perhaps they had simply settled
deeper... so i am considering sweeping again in all
metal' and easily switching back to disc.
so as to better identify and judge depth.....
learning as i go.... no one else around that detects
so i bounce my ideas off you guys.... thanks
for the responses

I did this type of thing when I modded my cibola. Put a switch on because I had to use the pinpoint button hole for the GB pot.

After testing the Bandido II µMax, I think it will fill the role I was looking for with out all the hassle. Thanks for the replies. As always very helpful.

Good choice!!!
Great machine

Most all of my machines have no-motion all-metal mode. It makes pinpointing super accurate, particularly with an open concentric coil. You can just keep de-tuning until you're right on top and the probe will hit the target most every time. I like that. My recently-acquired B2µMax doesn't really need no motion with a CleanSweep because you can back up the coil until the motion signal disappears and the target is exactly in front of the coil. I'm impressed.
I do hunt in all-metal with my Treasure Baron sometimes because it has two tone discrimination in no motion mode that's separately adjustable from the motion ID mode. I can switch to disc and it helps me pick through some of the foil.

I added a toggle switch to the red pinpoint button on a Silver Sabre umax. An easy chore, the only thing I didn't expect was when the pinpoint button was depressed was when it shifted into all metal, the opposite of what I had expected I had left the button in the circuit thinking I could have the best of both worlds, but I should have just swapped out the button for the switch. You could probably just replace the button with a toggle switch - might have to drill the hole out a bit larger and on the SSumaz running with an audible threshold will give a change in tone as the ground balance is preset.
