Vaquero or UMax Gold...and why?

Which of these machines would be better suited as a coin/relic machine, mostly coinshooting. I currently use a silver UMax, but I am gettin another detector soon as my son has taken over the silver already. Any advice would be helpfull. Thank You

The V is a great all around machine,
If you want a coin shooter that has more then one tone then the Golden would fit the bill perfect..There is a Golden on the forums at a GREAT price right now and if i had the money i would of snagged it.

I saw that one....but I have one on layaway already, and I am starting to wonder if the Vaquero may be a better choice?

The Golden has 4 tones, the adjustable notch is nice too. Mine detects a buried dime at 7", good little machine.

I still have my Vaq. and probably will for a long time. Great depth, terrific pinpoint(xing) and very versatile with the manual GB, parks, old home sites, beaches(wet sand or dry) it does it all. I sold the Golden after giving it 6 months of use, it didn't have the depth of the V and I didn't like the freq separation on the tones. The notch feature was good, but you still dig a fair number of tabs if you want the gold. I will say my nickel percentage was up when using the golden. Bought a F5 to replace the Golden, still learning that one, I like the tones better and it also has a manual GB which helps in tough soil conditions. If you want to coin shoot with the V just turn up the disc and cherry pick, I don't know if all Vaq will do this, but on my machine you can set the disc just a hair past tab(still gets a tab signal, but very broken) and it will still signal on medium to large gold rings. Or you can thumb the disc when you hit a target at the lower setting.

Just spent the day with my boy and our UMax silver. Went to two different parks and finished the day with $5.60 Not a bad haul for two beginners imho. I am still torn between the Golden and the Vaquero but leaning toward the vaquero now based on what I have seen so far. That little garrett pro-pointer is incredible in locating the coins, and fast. We were able to locate every target with that pointer, I am impressed with it.

Pinpointers are a great help in my opinion. As to another machine, if you stay with the

For relic and coin I would chose the V . But coin and jewelry I would chose the Golden hands down , it has great tones and a excellent notch system . But that being said the V is a great all round machine , I guess it just depends on type of hunting your going to do more of ...

I swing a Vaquero and I love it, but I am primarily a relic hunter. I only do a bit of coin shooting. If I were going to buy another detector to primarily hunt for coins, especially in parks, playgrounds, athletic fields and tot lots, it sure as the devil would not be a Vaquero. For park-playground type work I'd prefer a Silver uMax or Compadre.

Let me explain the reasons. In all my years of detecting I have found most of the park-playground finds came from surface finds to a maximum depth of about 6 inches. You really don't need High Output Technology to reach down 6 inches or less. The Vaquero goes way beyond that, reaching down into zone of what was there before it was a park. Too often in these cases you are pulling something out that was imported in fill dirt when they landscaped the park or playground.

There are many good coin hunters out there, many using machines that are 10-15 years old but not missing a beat. The technology is good enough to do what the detector is being asked to do. These machines are not being asked to reach down 10-15 inches and they never will. Don't need to. Keep that in mind when hunting for your next detector, especially if you are going to be mainly be hunting on lawn type grass. Most of your finds will come within that 2 to 3 inch range.

Don't feel to bad for me a club member sold me one this week for $100!!!!
he bought it used and said he couldn't figure it out and was going to stick to his Compadre.
I used it this weekend and think we are going to be good friends:)

Watch the for sale sections of the forums and Ebay. Eventually almost any model one is looking for shows up. I've picked up 6 used detectors over the years from Ebay with no problems although there's always a bit of risk.
