Vaquero or DeLeon best for coin hunting?

Frank in NH

Active member
I know the V has ground balance and Deleon is fixed ground balance. Also does the Deleon id in all metal with a number?

Yes it does. I've had both. I kept the Deleon and have dug more than 4000 coins in about a year and a half.

But is the Deleon deeper than the cabola ? I had a Deleon when they came out but seemed a little nervous and didn't seem that deep to me? shortribs.

Not sure that the Outlaw may be a better coin shooter than the Vaquero because of its lower freq.

The Vaquero may be a little better if main object is old deep silver, if in fact it is deeper than the Outlaw, but just coin shooting the added depth may not really be needed. If the Outlaw gets the same depth all bets are off.Any coins deeper than what the Outlaw will find have been in the ground a while and using them can sometimes be a problem.

Just a different perspective.

I find my Deleon as deep as my non-supertuned Vaquero. I pulled a silver dime out of my front yard that 20 years of detector testing failed to find. Just luck? Maybe. But 23 silver finds last year has me sold on the Deleon.

Strictly as a coin shooter, I'd have to pick my Deleon. Good depth in the soils I usually hunt and the display is pretty accurate. If mineralized ground is a serious concern, then I'd stick with a detector that either has manual or true auto ground tracking.

The Deleon is a very capable coin shooter in my mild ground. The pre-set Ground Balance is spot on for milder, less mineralized soil, If the Deleon reports with a 95 VDI number, it is 9 times out of 10 chance of being a copper penny or higher denomination. The 95 number lumps copper pennies (pre-1982) plus silver and clad dimes, quarters, halves and silver dollars all together.

...It is a very sensitive machine and likes to run with a lower Sensitivity to remain stable (about 6 or 7 ). It likes to be swept with a higher coil height above the ground than the usual 1" above the soil (2 inches is about optimum). Also, I run low Disc. setting to hit hard on nickels, usually run it at a midway point between MIN.and IRON.
