Vaquero interesting find

I ran the Vaquero around parts of the front yard this morning that was shielded from the misty rain. Along with a few chunks of iron and a 1920s shot shell base I found this clasp. It appears to be mother of pearl but very worn from years buried in the sandy soil. It's intact except for the delicate white areas. On the back of each side are double rings where it might have been fastened to a garment with long straight pins. I was down fairly deep in a spot I've passed over with the Compadre a number of times. The Vaquero gave a very weak but repeatable signal so I dug the spot.

Figured out what this thing is, it's a clock or cape clasp. So far as age it's something that was commonly used in this form factor in the mid to late 1800s. According to what I've read most of the ones lost are in pieces since they would break and fall away. Other than the damage to the mother of pearl the metal portions are strong. It might be silver but there are no markings other than the small designs on the links connected the chain sections.

That's a neat find. You just never know what you might dig up.
