Since the maiden trip with the Vaq. in the front yard went so well I decided to head to the beach today. Long story short I found not one but two silver rings today in the dry sand.....My first silver rings! Needless to say I'm very happy with this detector. More importantly .....within a couple of hours on the beach I am quickly learning that you can distinguish between foil (although I dig anyways) and a solid metal, I can also tell the difference between a penny, dime, nickel, and quarter with out thumbing the disc. knob. This unit is superb!! I don't expect it to be so cut and dry when out hunting deeper in solid ground, but I'm very impressed so far......
I can tell in the dry sand down to about 6" pretty easy by the length of the beep and how hard it hits. It's hard to explain but I'll try. A penny has a medium hit and a longer beep than a dime. A nickel has a softer hit and longer beep. A dime has a harder hit but shorter in duration. A quarter has a hard hit, typically a double hit that is obviously a longer tone. That is with out hitting pinpoint or disc. Now with foil, it hits softer until you pinpoint then the tone is high, but I dig anyways. A tab hits hard but pinpoints with a high tone also. I found a few coins down as deep as 10" but they were a medium hit and had a short beep. Both rings hit like dimes. Now I'm new to this machine and your results may be different, these are my thoughts on it so far. I'll imagine when it comes time to hit the solid ground all bets are off....I will dig all to be safe.. Hopefully I haven't provided some secret Tesoro learning code here...
I had noticed that you have posted a pic of the disc. dial with a "map" as to where you find. Nice job. I wonder if maybe ground conditions give varied results or if even machines vary slightly as mine falls a little differently on both coins and rings. It could be as simple as a disc. pot. moved. Even an 8th of an inch would make a big difference. You have me thinking now. I will have to get out some more of my wife's small hoop ear rings and light necklaces to make sure I'm not passing stuff up!
A couple of small gold rings I found disced out right at the foil line, so I always set mine at minimum below that.
The lower the disc the deeper she goes so lately I have moved down right next to the iron mark.
You should try power balancing, sometime.
You can get a little deeper and the tones come in a little clearer when you hunt in disc.
In tot lots and at sandy beaches I usually hunt in all metal just to make sure I get everything, even the smallest and deepest items.
Thanks for the info. guys, I really appreciate it! Looks like I have more research to do. What is power balancing? Is that another word for super tuning? I was digging tons of foil at the beach, small pieces of gum wrapper even. I thought it was safely set to find a gold ring if I came across one, but tabman has me wondering now....
