Vaquero Headphones

Ok....I did search and really cannot find what I am looking for, so thought I would ask here. I do not here well out of my right ear....basically deaf. Left ear is fine. When I ordered my Vaquero from Rusty he suggested a set of headphones that he said would work just fine and they seem to. They are volume controlled. So, as I read many a post talking of headphones, many recommend some brands costing a lot more. With the Vaquero not having a screen and going by tone only, am I loosing much information? Do I need good seperation to hear what the Vaq is telling me?
Just curious.

Everyone has their favorites... personally, I use killer B's with my Vaquero and they are quality built, comfortable, plenty of volume to spare, and
I am able to distingush some tone variances with them when swinging over various types of targets.
I would say if yours suit you and get the job done, you should be fine with them and they will perform fine.

You are probably fine. I use a better set of Calrad headphones 15-118 model. They are 32 ohm where the cheaper ones are 8 ohm. I have them to be perfectly satisfactory. There are higher priced models such as Killer Bees or Gray Ghost that are wonderful headphones but I personally don't think the increased performance (which I can't hear) is worth the additional cost. It's kind of like buying a Tesoro Metal detector for 1/2 or 1/3 the price of some of the other brands an getting 95% of the performance. The question is is 5% (or less) performance with a lot of bells and whistles worth twice the price?

I use some cheap treasure wise headphones (calrad makes them) and they work pretty well for me. If you are using disc mode, you can always check the target by slowly thumbing the disc knob until the signal breaks up or disappears. At max discrimination, silver, copper and brass will still hit strong. The line between iron and 5 cents is a good place to start if you don't want to dig iron nails, etc. You can still pick up gold jewelry at this setting as well. Large pieces of oxidized iron will still get a signal even at max disc. If you are using all metal, try to get the threshold to a barely audible hum, and slowly crank the sensitivity til you find a stable, (but loud enough) setting. If anything, you may be missing more by having a visual ID, due to relying on it and deciding not to dig the fluctuating signals, which sometimes can be a pulltab with a mercury dime or gold ring next to it! I'm still learning my Vaquero, and I like it more every time I use it.

DLH, are you asking if the Vaq has stereo audio? If so, the answer is no. Although it uses stereo headphones, you won't hear different sounds out of left vs right.

I too have hearing loss and was fitted with a hearing aid on my left ear and my koss headphones really brings out the tones, be sure to get head phones that are snug and not loose to make sure it blocks out the outside noise!

I have a pinpointer that is a vibraprobe 580 made by treasure products. I have been very pleased with it. Instead of using sound to locate targets it uses vibration. I like hunting with it because it is silent, does not draw crowds and is very effective at finding targets in the hole. I do not suffer with hearing loss, but have been intrigued by a device they make called the vibraphone(the cost is 79.99, on their website), it plugs into your headphone slot and takes the place of wearing headphones. I can see how it would be more difficult using this on any detector where the user relies on multi-tones, but if you dig all targets or use a single tone detector, it should work amazing. I have been really impressed with the customer service of this company and the quality of their products. I own 2 of their probes and would like to own the 3rd one. The company is located in the USA and their products are made in the USA and they offer a 1 year warranty on their products. You can just google treasure products and check out this product and more. ISM.....I figured the Vaq wasnt sending tones in stereo, but think you hit the nail on the head by saying the same sound comes out of each left and right earphone. As a matter of fact, now that I thoght about it, I have seen headphones with just one ear cup.

Denis,

I use Sunray Pro Golds w/ separate volume controls for each side. They typically sound more on the high tone or lean to high tremble vs. other headphones (correct me if I'm wrong here). I've had a Vaquero and used Pro Golds, Radio Shack earbuds, Macally wireless headphones and now recently RATS. Now RATS run more robust tones vs. Pro Golds and have a separate volume control too. . . I like them both. It's too bad that the Vaquero runs w/only one (1) tone. Personally I prefer 3 to 4 tones like the Golden uMax. . . Oh Well.

As far as your right ear vs. left ear, you may want to crank up the volume a little more on your right side of the headphone. It may help, I don't know? You probably thought of that already.

The Pro Golds run about $120

Garrett's makes a set of headphones w/separate volume controls per side and they range in price at about $25 -$30

Good Luck on your search,

TC-NM

I use a one ear cup set. I find that I can still hear all the subtle changes of my Cibola but also don't lose track of my environment. I took a pair of old Fostek headphones where one of the ear cups had been busted up. I removed the broken cup and the attachment hardware. The result is a great headphone that still has the big padded headband and stays in place; but is lighter and lets me remain aware of what's going on around me.

Funny you said that about being able to still know what is going on around you. I was out this morning just doing a casual hunt in the park I was at yesterday when all of a sudden a stray dog walked up next to me and scared the heck out of me. Then the owner walked up and said..."he will just lick you to death"...well, I didnt know that!!....lol. So I can see where the one ear cup could be an advantange.

I use Killer B's on my "V" and my other detectors as well, and find them perfect for me. Size, comfort, tone, volume control all excellent. Im sure most of the top line phones will work fine as well.
