Vaquero Headphone jack mod without voiding the warranty...I think.

Ism

Well-known member
In the summer months I use the cheap ear-buds that coincidentally are 32 Ohm (a better impedance match to the detector) while the high priced ones are 16 Ohm. The cheapies have a short cable but Short or long the wire gets in my way when I'm digging and I usually yank the buds out of my ear. In addition, I can't move the detector far enough away from me because of the short cable. The headphone jack on the Vaquero is in a bad spot so I moved it. This may have been done by others but I thought I would show what I did so that others could take advantage. I had some jacks and plugs lying around so I put an 1/8 inch stereo jack in the end plug of the shaft by the arm cuff. Drilled a hole in the shaft just under the grip near the box and ran a cable through. I had a right angle 1/4 inch stereo plug but it was no good (brand new...go figure), so I had to use an 1/8 straight plug and an 1/8 -1/4 adapter plug. Now the cable stays out of the way and I have the freedom to move the detector far enough off to the side so its not a bother while I'm retrieving objects.
Hope its a help to others on the forum and should work with other Tesoro models. I had to hot glue the end plug because it would pull out when removing the jack from the plug as its only intended for cosmetic purposes.

ISM, Great Idea:clapping:, I am going to do that for sure!! On my golden and also my cibola. Now these are the things Tesoro should be doing, How much would that cost them!:ranting:

Ha, I thought it might get bumped over to the mods forum. I figured that this was a tesoro specific mod it should be there. I weighed the odds and was wrong.
Thanks Pecor

That's where my AM switch and volume control are.
I'll stick with my Sony phones with the 8' coiled cord although that IS a better location to plug into.

Your mod looks very good Ism.
I did something similar with my Compadre and Tejon.
If you look closely at the picture you can see where I fed the audio cable through one of the top holes used for adjusting the pole length.
It's a tight fit getting it past the internal spring clip but not hard to do.
It easily slid past the trigger switch and battery cables on the Tejon.
I used a wire tie-wrap to secure the cable to the Arm-cuff mounting bolt just inside the end of the tube.
I am sure this won't effect the warranty since I didn't drill any holes and I used an end-plug from the Hardware store instead of the original one.
Like you said Ism, it really helps to keep the cord back and out of the way.

BeyWolf, I did something similar but fed it on the outside and then hotglued the 1/8 jack to the back of the armcuff (I have a pic somewhere i think), it worked well for a while but the 1/4 right angle jacks I bought to plug into the box were junk and my headphones would constantly cut out.
When I reworked the idea, the version you see is what I finally came up with. Im sure there is a lot of room for improvement and like to see what others come up with. There have been some great ideas in this forum.
