Vaquero ground balance ????

Member
I have always read that it's best way to ground balance is slightly positive to get better depth. This also requires putting up with more noise. That doesn't appear to be the case with the Vaquero. It will air test 2 inches better on coins with the GB fully negative, than it will with it fully positive. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this.

I'm waiting on someone more experienced than me to reply, but I also have a Vaquero and I have noticed that if I am hunting and it starts to get noisy, then the ground balance is too negative. Mine is quiet as a mouse when ground balanced either evenly or slightly positive.
I haven't tried the test you are describing, but I think my detector would be too noisy in hunting conditions if I ground balanced it negative.
I have not heard of any benefits from ground balancing negative.
Hope some others will respond to this to see what their opinion is.

Fully negative gave 2 more inches in air test.
I've also found that being negative can be an advantage in some areas.
The next time you get a faint but repeatable signal, before digging the target try different adjustments with the GB and see what happens to the beep. Hope this helps.

I found that being positive (hot) gave me a lot of noise and problems with iron bits not discing out. I f I went negative it smoothed out and seemed to work better on coins.

Bottom line; what works best in one area may not give optimum performance in other areas. Soil can be highly to slightly mineralized, neutral, alkaline or negative. Best bet is to try different settings as suggested and see what works best in your area. GH, David@Dixie

There is no way I could hunt with it fully negative, but I did see a difference with air test. For my ground, I've had better luck doing the ground balance then turning the knob 1/2 turn in the negative direction. It appears to work on my buried coins. Next time I find a deep target I'm going to test it. I tried this with the the tejon and it didn't make any difference. Thanks for the replies.

The Vaquero, and others, set at full negative with the ground balance is
accepting everything. That increases depth.

But, we don't hunt in the air, we hunt in whats under our feet.

The ground can be seen by the Vaquero, and will respond to it.

The ground must be made to be more or less invisible to the Vaquero.

We do that with the Manual Ground Balance Control. ( MGB )

We use the MGB to discriminate out the ground so that it is more or less
invisible to the Vaquero.

The MGB is more or less just a Master Discriminator that works on both
the All Metal and the Disc Mode. It is much more sensative than the
discriminator that the Disc Mode operates on.

The more positive we have to set the MGB to eliminate the ground, the
less depth that may be achieved, which depends on many factors, other
than the MGB setting.

Happy Hunting,

Who cares about air test results? Like the other guy said we do not hunt in air. I think that you might not be fully undertanding the point of ground ballanceing and why it is needed to maximize results. I do not understand why you would want to fully negative your ground ballance if that is not what your ground requires?

I too am getting different results depending on whether I am air testing or working outdoors. After my last air test I though I had it solved. However, tonight I spent some time outdoors and was picking up nails even with my disc set to reject iron. I brought it back inside, and without changing the settings, air tested it again. It did not pick up the nails. I have however been having trouble with my GB. I have expected this since I am new to the machine. However for what it's worth let me explain. When I set my adjustments according to the manual and "pump" the machine I never can get a totally smooth unbroken tone no matter how much I fiddle with the GB adjustment. It always has a broken or wavering tone. I end up getting it to a point where it is not good but the best it apparently is going to get. With this in mind I don' see how I could ever use it in all metal mode other than for pinpointing since the threshold tone is too inconsistent to provide an accurate response on deep whisper tones. In other words I might be hearing a target but probably it is simply the nature of the wavering nature of the threshold tone.
