My hunting buddy and I got out for a few hours saturday. We went to the new picnic grove and tried to hunt in the tall weeds but it is just to hard to hunt. We even made a little device like you see people making crop circles with...a 3' wide board with a rope handle to flatten the weeds down, but it was hot and we decided to give up on it until it gets mowed in the early spring. It's hard to give up on a new unhunted area that was used in the 1860's and 1870's by hundreds of people, but until the weeds are cut it is almost useless trying to hunt the site.
So off we went to my old faithful picnic grove that has produced lots of coins in the past. The grass was tall there also but we were able to swing a coil there. The ground is dry and hard digging but I did manage to hit a 1906 D barber dime at about 5 inches deep. I was running my disc at iron and checking signals with the disc knob. The Vaquero was still hitting the target past pulltab setting so I knew it was either an old copper coin or silver. My pro pointer said the target was in a clump of dirt on the ground and when I broke it open out popped the dime. We didn't find much else there but with the ground so dry and hard I didn't want to dig alot anyways. HH........
