Vaquero got another silver coin saturday

My hunting buddy and I got out for a few hours saturday. We went to the new picnic grove and tried to hunt in the tall weeds but it is just to hard to hunt. We even made a little device like you see people making crop circles with...a 3' wide board with a rope handle to flatten the weeds down, but it was hot and we decided to give up on it until it gets mowed in the early spring. It's hard to give up on a new unhunted area that was used in the 1860's and 1870's by hundreds of people, but until the weeds are cut it is almost useless trying to hunt the site.

So off we went to my old faithful picnic grove that has produced lots of coins in the past. The grass was tall there also but we were able to swing a coil there. The ground is dry and hard digging but I did manage to hit a 1906 D barber dime at about 5 inches deep. I was running my disc at iron and checking signals with the disc knob. The Vaquero was still hitting the target past pulltab setting so I knew it was either an old copper coin or silver. My pro pointer said the target was in a clump of dirt on the ground and when I broke it open out popped the dime. We didn't find much else there but with the ground so dry and hard I didn't want to dig alot anyways. HH........

I'll take a barber any day! gotcha on the hard ground. Georgia is hot and dry dry dry mid state, and no rain in sight. Irene missed us completely

dixiedigger57, I hear you on the hot and dry part. It is kinda ironic because a couple of months ago we were flooded big time around this area. Some areas had as much as 13 inches of rain in a 24 hour period. Glad to hear Irene missed you...but it sounds like the east coast got hammered pretty good.

How well did it sound off on that coin at 5''? Since the vaq is higher frequency I'm curious how well it does on sliver. NICE FIND BTW!

DetectorOCD, The Vaquero hit the dime hard at 5 inches and would have gotten it several inches deeper I'm sure. And this was in bone dry ground. Since I bought the detector new a couple of months ago all I have had was dry ground to hunt and it still has pulled several old nickels and other assorted coins from the old picnic grounds I found the barber dime in. My deepest silver coin so far was a mercury dime at about 8 inches and it hit it with no problems. I always run the Vaquero super tuned and without headphones because of the heat. It really bangs hard on nickels....I found 4 V nickels one day at the grove. Overall, it is an excellent detector with great depth and discrimination. If you get the coil over a target the Vaquero will find it. The higher frequency doesn't seem to affect its silver finding capabilities one bit. If you have never tried a Vaquero you are missing out on one of Tesoro's best detectors.
It's smooth as silk in the trash with hardly a sound until you hit a good target. While I haven't found any gold with it yet, I have no doubt it will bang hard on gold rings.............HH....

Nice find! I wish I could find a good place to hunt coins like that.

tabman, lots of research will help you find old sites from days gone by that can be very productive. I read online alot and look at old county atlas maps to locate my sites. I'm sure it would apply to your area also. I'm not sure where you live, but the david rumsey maps for that area might be a big help. They show the locations of old schools and churches that no longer exist along with many other interesting things. HH..............
