Vaquero for coins?

abcoin

Active member
Hi everyone,

I've been looking around for a new detector lately. I need a machine that would be good for hunting older coins, yet able to function in newer parks for clad hunting on occasion. I'm particularly interested in the Vaquero because of the very positive reviews I've read of the machine. Also, I live in an area of the US where the soil is rather red and iron-rich, so the manual ground balance is a must. Based on the research I've done so far, I have a couple of questions for anyone who has experience with the Vaquero:

1. How does the machine handle mineralized soil?

2. In using my current detector to hunt for coins, tone and target ID in general has been a handy feature. Is the Vaquero a good coin machine despite the fact that it is a monotone machine?

Any responses are appreciated!

The Vaquero handles mineralized soil very well. Once the get the hang of tuning it, it takes but literally a few seconds to re-tune on each hunt.

For the most part I have always hunted with machines that don't have meters and readouts so I have no problem with my Vaquero.

I run my discriminator just under foil.

When I hit a target, I 'thumb' the discriminator knob forward till I discriminate it out.

That generally tells me what the target it.

I know exactly on the knob where pulltabs gets the boot.

Coins like dimes and quarters can't be discriminated out.

I know right where pennies vanish.

It takes a little practice but you will get it down.

As for depth, I raise the coil higher and higher to get a reading of how deep my target may be.

Good luck and happy hunting.

generally what kind of depth,on average are you seeing on the vaquero?

thanks!

Most oldtimers never hunted with an ID unit and went by audio variances and of course thumbing the disc. which is an art in itself...Handles bad ground well and seems like Tesoro is now coming out with deeper units which are outdoing the old ones by several inches..When we talk about depth we have to dial in, expertise of the operator, area we are hunting and of course the
general tuning of the unit..I would judge its an 8 inch unit perhaps more taking into consideration of the above and size of target and how its laying in the ground...Excellent buy for the bucks..and of course service after the sale.

thanks dan !..if it's getting down 8" or so on a coin, then it does indeed "pack a wallop!"
just sayin!

That detector will get 12 inches on a nickle. :tesoro:

Does well on coins, my best was a clad dime at 10+ inches, (not in boost mode) . Regularly get coins at 6-8 inches. You can kick up the disc to about 2-3 o'clock position and it cherry picks quite well. Fast retune for multiple targets(pocket spills). The 5.75 con coil is a great accessory for the trash areas, I really don't see much, if any at all depth loss compared to the stock coil.

For what little you may loose in depth with the 5.7 you will more than make up in target- trash area keepers

Thanks for all of the responses! Virtually everything I've read has confirmed that this is a very capable machine. I may have to pick one up before prices increase next month!

After hunting with my new Vaq for roughly 40 hours, I say it maxes out around 8" on a dime. My ground is generally medium mineralization. I have yet to find a bigger coin deeper than that but it stands to reason that it would go deeper on a quarter.

It seems to out-perform my XLT on depth by a small margin.

Hey
I own a V and find it to be a "must have" MD. It's deep, articulate, and by adjusting your discriminator you can ID targets. I'm at the point where I can ID a target by sound now.
These links to my videos might help.
Thanks
Mike
