Vaquero find

I went hunting with a couple of friends around an old home site and found this chinese coin. Can anyone tell me how old it may be? There were four of these found that day along with a 1926 standing liberty quarter and a 1908 barber quarter.
I also found an 1880 and an 1897 IH cent while searching around this site.

Thanks for looking,
Felix

.... in 20 years of detecting I have yet to find one. Drat!

Have found some at old Chinese mining camps. I wonder how many I have thrown away (if any) because once when I was throwing out the junk from the pouch, the wife had something caught her eyeball. It turned out to be an open center token - I thought it was just another junk washer. I posted a pic some time back. Now I give anything resembling a washer a second look.
Nice find - I just don't know much about them but I think in another section there is some more posts about them.

Added] Just had to come back and say, one of the nice things about the beep and dig simplicity - no sore neck from staring down on a display screen for hours on end. Just a slow pace swinging the coil, listening, and enjoy the scene:detecting:

send me some clear pictures and I can tell you.
Thanks Both sides clear pics of the characters, no flash if it works better.
Eric

I couldn't photograph the coin to get enough detail, so I drew what I could make out.
Hopefully this will be of some aid.
There are 4 charactors on one side and only two on the other side.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Felix

I would, but the indian head cents are in pretty bad shape. I just could barely make out the date on the the 1880.
The 1897 was not much better condition.

Hi fwcrawford,

Try out the following websites for some identification of your find.

http://www.sportstune.com/chinese/coins/idpage.html

http://coins.calkinsc.com/old_site/doc/chinesecash.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_w%C3%A9n

http://www.geocities.com/wongtk_3/

http://www.joelscoins.com/china.htm

Of course there are probably other websites that might help you with an ID, these should work well for you.
I found several of the Chinese cash coins searching inner city Portland, Oregon metro area parking strips and sidewalk repairs.
This is when I found the first site on the list.
Also, you can find World Coin reference books at major city central library reference desks to help out too.

Thanks,

Doyle
