Vaquero Depth Test

Fletch88 asked me to test my Vaquero in DISC mode using max sensitivity and threshold at 2:30 and thought I would be able to hear a minnieball at 17". I did more than that, I tested a whole array of things in AM and DISC between iron and 5 cents. Here are the results:

Looks like you are getting a little more distance while in disc. mode which surprises me.
I've often heard that you get better depth while in all metal mode on most machines.
From my understanding, in all metal mode, the sensitivity is at full and cannot be adjusted.
I have read this and it seems to hold true while checking my machine during tests.
The test results I sent you the other day were performed with my detector set to where I usually hunt with except for the disc. setting.
I set it at min. and set the threshold just audible and set the sensitivity where it was not chirping.
I got a little better results than you have here.. maybe due to your sens. setting or disc. setting.
I checked my machine in the settings I described above shortly after I wrote you the other day and even with the 5.75" coil, I was getting a signal at around 11" on a .52 cal. sharps bullet.

Must admit this one has had me scratching my head, most suprised that you are getting greater depth in discrimination mode than AM,is this possibly unique to the specific model or do other Tesoro machines perform the same ??? i have a mint condition UK version of the original Bandido and i am finding that i am also getting slightly better depth in disc than AM as well only tested it with a Concentric coil.

But on most of my other machines i gain better depth in AM,certainly is a mystery.

One mistake I made. It wasn't a minnieball, it was a Williams cleaner. when I tried a minnieball I got a max of 11" in DISC and 8" in all metal! These are air tests, or course. But in the real world I can barely detect a minnieball at 8.5" in the ground with AM and cannot detect in DISC either supertuned or power tuned.

You lose at least 30% ground depth when comparing air test to actual ground depth.

I believe the reason you get a louder report in Disc mode vs. AM is in Disc mode they increased the gain to amp to sound up--"high gain circuitry".
In AM mode target detection, depth of target the audio is somewhat linear. Deep targets may barely change the threshold audio, then in disc mode give a louder report.

I use both modes to determine target size and depth, or you can determine if the target is trash.

Now if I remember correctly the Cib and the Vaq in disc mode the target report doesn't have much of a variance between shallow or deep targets. Its loud. This is where all metal mode comes into play.

Tesoro detectors I have had, noticed air testing on the average difference between disc and AM mode was about 1" to 1 1/2". Others about 2-3" difference.

Going to positive, negative in your GB you will either gain or lose some depth depending upon target.

Your tests seem roughly normal to me for a Vaquero. Unfortunately, there are great variances in the tests performed with tesoros and they appear to vary greatly in depth.

Having the disc setting slightly deeper than all metal is not unusual at all. In real dirt, all metal is deeper due to the minerals. In air tests, it's a tossup. My shadows X5s would do a little better in Disc in air tests.

My New Vaquero gets even less than the numbers you have posted. I would say 5 to 6 inches max on a silver dime... in the air or in the ground. I made a video to prove it but seeing as how I'm new around here I don't want to come off as a member who is just here to promote youtube videos.

I sent mine in to Tesoro and they sent it back with a clean bill of health... but it is still lacking. I have actually stopped using it at this point as my Silver Umaxx is just as deep.
