vaquero depth:ausflag:

is there any adjustments that can be made with the vaquero to limit search depth?now i know that every other body wants to go deep, deeper and deepest.i don't! i hunt for modern day coins to enrich my bank balance.two to four inchs okay.digging twelve inchs in to mother earth ain't my scene.i have a minelab xt50 you can set the search depth to a certain degree by turning down the sense but it tends to get heavy after awhile.i'd much prefer to use the vaquero because it's lighter and finds more.hh,see ya! blowfly

When I don't want to hunt deep, I set the Sensitively down On the Vaquero. It will still shoot pretty deep, but I can hear the deep targets. They are usually much longer and smoother. If the ground is not too hard, I just have to dig them. Bill In Texas :tesoro:

.... there is no reason you MUST run the SENS wide open all the time.

Hay Blow Fly,

I know what you mean. I'm not a depth monger either.

But depth is misunderstood. In some situations you

can only get a few inches, so there is no real depth

when that happens.

I like to surface hunt as I call it and look for the fresher

drops. Lots of jewelry is close to the top.

I have become good at determining depth by the response

and raising the coil.

The Vaquero will go deep even with the sensativity turned

all the way down. It is a little harder to judge depth with the

Vaquero, but I have learned how.

The Compadre with the 7" coil is the best surface hunter I

have. That was $70 well spent.

The 7" Copmpade has great expression and is obvious about

depth. It has the same depth as the 5.75, but less seperation.

The good thing about the 7" is it's smooth expressive response.

I know right away how deep it is.

But, most people seem to ignore it and want to dig deep.

I don't know, but it may work better with a 7" coil.

I don't have one for my V so I can not say if it would work like

it does on the Compadre.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

gid day tabdog or nite, what ever.i raise the coil over a target and try and judge how deep it is.some i figure out, some i don't.. i'm getting there slowly.you said the compadre with the 7"coil is the best surface hunter you have used.in australia we have the option of a 8"coil,would this be as good or not?i have the compadre with the 5.75"coil in tot lots it's fine but in open parkland,i find it would take forever and day to cover any sort of distance with it.to-morrow i'll hit a beach with the vaquero early in the morning and i'll chain it, which will drive other detectorists nuts.hh,see ya! blowfly.

Blowfly , sounds like the vaq is a deep machine but i know what you are looking for the CIBOLA i owned one and you can turn it way down and you will not find any coins deeper than 3" and the 8x9 coil pinponts great even in high trash i regret getting rid of it that is the great thing about the cibola yes you can turn it up and find a dime at 6" but if you turn the sens to one you will get great 2" to 3 " depth on coins and i would say if you put the 5.75 widesan it would get good coverage as well the reason i got rid of mine was it had no all metal mode but as i look back i can seethe ability to turn down the depth is a valuble feature on a detector as valuble as depth plus"" when you turn down the sensitivity on the cibola it will not false on small things like BBs or foil you get better clearer signals that are much easear to pinpont i have a compadre and yes it is a good surface feeder but i could still get less depth whith the cibola than my compadre and i cant cover much ground whith the compadre I would highly recomend the CIBOLA as you can go deep or turn it down and get really shalow targets

thumb the SENS down until you get the minimum SENS settings for a solid hit. You may want to try this over different coin targets as the same SENS setting will not get the same depths for different coin metals or coin sizes. If you set a four inch depth for copper or nickel coins, you may find that your maximum detecting depth for silver coins to be much shallower.

SENS settings also differ among hunt sites due to differing mineralization so you may want to try burying your desired targets and adjust SENS on site.

Vaquero should be a lot like the Cibola. Last year I went to hunt a school yard with my Cibola and found the ground was frozen. I could move the top one to two inches of wood chips around but below that it was like a rock. With sensitivity at around 2, I found a nice handful of recent drops and did not hit on much in the hard frozen ground. With my Tejon, turning down the sensitivity does not help much in staying shallow, but I believe the circuit board in the Vaquero looks like the one in the Cibola.

So, I'd recommend turning down the sensitivity and seeing if that helps you.

well i did go to the beach this morning with the vaquero, found $8.40 in small change and a ,what looks like white gold 14 carat ring.it's the first one i've seen.it must have been lost by a tourist.i can't show you all a picky of it .our camera and computer don't like each other

Hay Blow Fly,

I would not recomend turning the sensativity down on a beach.

The low sensativity can kill any depth in some conditions, and
it will make the MD less sensative to small gold jewelry.

Sensativity reduces more than depth.

I keep mine as high as I can stand it.

I keep my disk as low as I can stand it.

Thet gives me sensativity to small gold

and the response is clearer sounding.

I need clearity because I judge depth

by listening, and I like gold and

diamonds.

TD

My two bits - go to a smaller coil and adjust the sensitivity to your liking. The smaller coil will slip thru and separate in trashy areas well and the depth is still adequate for coins in the 4-6" range.

hey tabdog i think we have our wires crossed.hunting on a beach with the vaquero ,i run all metal, max senseand dig all.sand is easy to dig in.however parks is another ball game.shallow targets is what i'm hunting here.fresh dropped coinage and jewellery.my xt50 can run on low sense and pick up shallow targets, but it gets heavy after a while and mostly it don't tell the truth.hh,see ya blowfly

Where I live I ran my vaquero sens at 3 and dug down to my elbow WITH digger to find a 3/4" long copper fitting waiting ,and with the 5.75 coil ...imagine my suprise, so its very hard for me to figure depth, but i am learnin its language
