Vaquero compared to XLT, my first impressions (long)

I got a new Tesoro Vaquero for Christmas this year. I have been eying it for a while and the wife pulled the trigger and got it for me. The past year I had been using a White

Excellent post. The Vaq is a smooth running deep detector. My deepest find with it was an 8" wheatie still imbedded when I measured it and a 7-8" girls gold HS ring in the same park. Sold the Vaq to a friend, he raves about it. Then I bought a Cortes, love it too. Not as deep but I prefer having a meter.

You inspire me! In this day and age you're out there digging up the good stuff. You've taught me a couple of things. Good Luck, and Good Hunting!

Excellent Post, and great pictures too:thumbup:

I'm with them.....Great post!

I received my Vaquero for xmas as well but the ground here in SW PA is pretty much frozen down to about 2"
so I'll have to wait to do any park hunting. I did have some luck with the ground not being solid in the woods
but the old farm cellar hole and property I went to shot a blank to me and my woman who was using a Bandido.
We spent more time arguing over who gets the Pro Pointer than detecting and digging...lol

Can't wait to hear and see more of your cowboy adventures.

Some like a metered unit and some do not as certainly an XLT well learned is argueably one of the best units to come down the pike in the last 20 years.

Tesoro makes them light and user friendly and certainly likes gold rings and once you learn their audio variances can compare with any non-metered unit on the planet...

Certainly a nice post and pictures were great so go for it as most would disagree, but again whatever works...and those that investigate find the goodies...

Wow! anybody says that wasn't fun just don't know what clean fun is! the scissors may be a high grade metal. being a former knife collector and having a buddy that has owned knife shops and is knife maker, he also sold and sharpened scissors. some of the queen steel and german brands were superior quality metal, and may have a little bit of nickel in them or plating on them, was it a good signal? we still hunt them at flea markets. just watch out for covered up wells on the old farm. had a friend fall in one and was lucky. i know several you could not get out. not good places to hunt alone. wish my wife could share hobby, but unfortunately she can't. i have read stories and know of old timers that buried jars of coins in and around barns and outhouses during depression. remember the old jar tops were glass with wire hoops, but then came the zinc screw owns that we find regularly partially eat away by soil. anyway, happy hunting! refreshing post!

UPDATE:

I got a chance today to take the Vaquero on the beach. It

what size coil were you using ?

Stock coil. I am eying the SEF coil that has popped up recently but for now stock is the way to go until I learn the machine.

Dixie,
We found a couple of old wells on that site. Scary when you look down them and think about accidentally falling in! The wife and I have been hunting old sites for a couple of years now so we know what to watch out for.

I run my Vaquero in discrimination mode and then press the pinpointing button for all metal. This gives added sensitivity and I can quickly move from AM to the discrimination by releasing the pinpoint all metal button when over a target. I like the extra depth and sensitivity of the all metal mode by using the button for AM I am getting a more thorough search.
