Vaquero coils

Wanted to know if anyone knew the difference between the 11" round and the 10x12 coils for the Vaquero, as far as depth and relic hunting use goes. I appreciate your help.

Hello Digger.......the 10"x12"DD coil is one of the "Hot Coils" from Tesoro, and it works beautifully on the Vaquero. It sees 70% less ground effect than the concentric 11" round does. It does penetrate deeper in mineralized soil, and as a side benefit, it is lighter on the arm, giving you back the weight advantage the Vaquero offers. I use it on my Indian Wars battlefields and camp sites out here in heavily mineralized Colorado, and I couldn't be more pleased!

DIRECTLY FROM TESORO.......:tesoro:

"The 12x10 widescan is designed to penetrate deeply in highly mineralized sites that are not burdened with an abundance of junk. The Double D windings

Thanks Chuck. I may be ordering one from you.

Does that mean that a double D coil with less ground effect might be able to be ground balanced in the wet sand at the beach?
Or do I misunderstand what I'm reading.

I recently went to Tybee Island and was not able to balance my Vaquero in the wet sand using the stock coil. I would be willing to buy a different coil if there's a chance it would balance in wet sand.

:tesoro:Hello Al.....the Vaquero can be ground balanced at the beach, with either the standard or the larger coil. The wet salt sand doesn't really effect the "ground balance", it is a function of the conductivity of the wet salt that causes the problems. With either coil, if you "ground balance up in the dry sand, then switch to discriminate, and turn your discriminator up enough to reject the iron and foil", you can then approach the wet salt sand. The standard coil will be a little more erratic than the DD coil will, and you may have to turn your sensitivity down a bit because of it. According to Tesoro, the DD should run a little smoother over the wet salt than the standard concentric will, provided those steps listed above are followed in that order.:tesoro:

Good to see your posts again... I ain't no expert but I thought I'd give my experience with the coils mentioned. I can't advise on the salt sand thing because I use other brands for this type hunting. I've never been able to GB the Tejon or Vaquero in wet salt sand unless they were so "detuned" as to be useless. I tried with the stock coils and the 5x10 DD coil from my LST and also the big white round 11" DD coil, but I never used the 10x12 at the beach. However I have used the new 10x12 coil on the Tejon & Vaquero and I never saw much depth improvement over the stock 8x9 coil in normal ground. In the nasty red dirt neither the Tejon or Vaquero go very deep and the use of the 10x12 DD in those areas seemed to only offer a very small improvement...I don't want to discourage you from trying the 10x12 DD and in fact I'd be interested to hear your report and experience with one after you've took it to the beach. Maybe it will do good for you...Good hunting and let us know how it goes..... Dave
