Just wanted to know how long the Battery life is in the Vaquero
thanks

my hunting partner changes his out after each full day hunt.. My non-Tesoro detector will get about 25 hrs. on one 9V battery. Mike in SE LA.

buy a couple of rechargables, then rotate, works great for me, this detector is powerful, takes power to produce power

I saw a Vaquero for the first time today. My buddy Chuck bought one recently and I think today was the first time he actually hunted with it. Chuck loves it. He had bought a Tejon earlier, but did not care for the all the noise it made, so he sold or traded and wound up with the Vaquero. The Vaquero ran smooth, quiet and dug deep and he was using his 5 inch coil. He dug a enfield bullit at around 6 inches or so. About the batteries...we were BS'ing at the end of the day and he was messing around with his machine, turning it on and off. He was counting the beeps it made when turned on. He told me that when the number of beeps is five, it's time to change out the battery as the machine supposedly loses quite a bit of punch at this point. We hunted around four and a half hours today and I know Chuck fooled around in his yard some with it. He was told that it uses battery power quickly and he doesn't mind cause he like the machine alot. Good digg'n Mike!

There's advantages and disadvantages to everything in life, though.

Many U.K. users are having the Pentechnic mod so that six AA's can be used (and using RAM batteries)

This question and several replies has me wondering. I haven't noticed any significant increased battery consumption on my Vaquero over what I experienced in the several Eldorados and all the other single 9v Tesoros I've owned. Maybe it's happening and I'm just missing the fact. Has anyone done any specific tests on this matter? The part about losing depth when the battery gets only partially discharged really has me wondering. How could that be when the battery voltage is processed through a regulator? Wouldn't the performance be pretty much the same until the battery was significantly discharged, ie at the one or two beeps level? Comments, Vince, James, or anyone?

I use alkaline 9 volts and get about 2-3 days on one battery. The Vaquero seems to use all the power out of a 9 volt and then quickly gives a peculiar "chatter" and goes dead. I tried a regular non alkaline two weeks ago and got about 3 hours on it. Battery life is dependant upon how many signals you receive; few signals, longer life. Many signals will pull more power. I would love a NiMH 9 volt but in the past they didn't last all day. I recommend getting a "bargain pack" of 9 volt alkalines. Cheaper in price The finds I've been making with the Vaquero have paid for my batteries 50 to one. Doing fine for me as well.

Hi David.. by chance have you tried the Tysonic 9v rechargeables? As you probably know, the internal dimensions of the battery holder in the Tesoros won't accept very many of the metal hydride rechargeables because of the batteries being varying degrees of oversize from standard alkalines. However, I've found the Tysonics will fit and I've had excellent battery life and performance using them in Tesoros.

Haven't tried them Brad. Email me their site if they have one. Any idea of how long they last? Thanks, David

Like you mentioned, battery life will be significantly affected by how one hunts whether in all metal or discriminate and how many targets they pass over. I've statically checked the V in all metal with a healthy threshold tone into headphones. I'd assume that is close to the most extreme draw one can put on a detector battery. Hope I'm not wrong with that assumption. Under that scenario, I got about 8 hrs. with the Tysonic. I did not check to confirm if there was any change in depth of detection as the battery was discharging. Using the same battery under actual hunting conditions (using the discriminate mode and headphones,) I've gotten 3 to 4 hunting sessions of 3 to 4 hrs. each before the battery check went below 5 beeps. Not very scientific, but at least to me that indicates battery draw isn't problematic. I usually change batteries after a couple hunts just out of habit. I sent you the web site where I got those batteries so if you don't get it, just email me back and I'll phone you with the info.

You can get them from Thomas Distributing. Just click the link below.
Good Hunting,

I missed your post. Otto is correct about Thomas. That's where I got mine. Keep in mind these will be a more snug fit than regular alkalines but you can get them in and out.
