vaquero all metal vs disc? any suggestions?

well i went back to the old 1903 house today?this am...hunted about 2 hours.used factory coil...sens at or around 6.
disc at above pulltab.....went slow and easy...
finds for the day are a rusty half a lock,an old small galvanized cowbell, the back half to an old farm toy tractor....crushed giant shotgunshell...
can' t complain about depth....got tired of digging......whew...a few were over a foot deep....
heavy black clay soil.....
i thumbed back and forth on the disc to see when things would break up?
most of the finds .....went all the way to max disc....
thought i had ground balanced right as there was no appreciable difference in the threashold ''hum'' when lifting and dropping coil...
seems weird i wouldn't have pulled even an old memorial or modern clad...given the age of site?
don't think its been cherry picked...was all over the front yard...judging by what i dug up seems to be 1900's to 50's trash....
so why no coins?
do you guys run in all metal and listen for audio changes and strength of changes?
or simply a case of newbie needing to learn machine...?
thanks

Looks like there should have been some coins in there, but sometimes you hit those sites that are not productive
I tried one a while back with a friend and we only found about 5 coins between us and only one silver one at that.
The house dated back to 1903.... we were let down that there was not more than that in there also.
Sometimes you just never know... maybe no kids lived there to lose any coins.
I normally hunt in disc. mode and usually find plenty of coins if they are there to start with.

:detecting: One of the machines that I use is a Vaquero. It sounds like most of the targets that you found were Large. When I get a good strong signal I do three things before digging.
1) I lift the coil to see how high before the signal dies out. Usually the higher off of the ground the larger the object.
2) I tilt the coil and try to read from the side some. That will help you know how deep the target is.
3) I listen to how long the coil is over the target to get a feel how big it is.
Then I take into account the things that I have already dug and the look of the area.
Sometimes I hunt in all metal (if the trash is not too bad and looking for jewelry), sometimes I hunt with the discriminator set just above foil (if hunting jewelry) and sometimes I hunt with the discriminator set just above pull tabs (if just looking for coins).
I always take more time thinking about the target I find than digging. I am just getting too old to dig all the time.

If I understand your question correctly, try the following settings for max depth in full disc.

Sens- full into the redzone
Disc- max
Threshold- just breaking sound so pinpoint still works ( I only use it for GB)

GB must be balanced, especially in trashy areas
So far I have found older dimes and pennies are at such a depth where I live, that it challanges the Vaqueros range in disc mode.
My Vaq handles these settings very nicely.

My buddy and I hit an old homestead from the late 1800's early 1900's last summer. I think we were both drooling as we walked up to the half-way standing house. We detected for over 5 hours the first time and I went back again for about 4 hours and we never found a single coin! So.. I guess it does happen.

In the area where I live, many of the old farmsteads etc. are not especially great for old coins. Probably because a lot of those folks didn't have a lot of money to carelessly lose at the time and took care to hold on to what little they had. Often lots of iron relics and farm equipment pieces in these places - many of which are interesting, but you wouldn't want a pile of them at home in your back yard.
However, like all detectihng, you just never know what you'll find until you've dug. Why did it beep? is one of the major things that keeps me digging whether it turns out to be a goodie or junk.
