this question i was going to ask tabdog ,but then there are many other people using the vaquero as well . when one says to hunt tot lots and dry sand beachs in the all metal mode,is this the all metal when you have ground balanced the machine or when you turn it to discrimination's mode all metal.i've tried the first but only after turning the threshold down slightly .that way and the new killer bees ,i seem to be finding more . am i doing the right thing or do i have to run in the other mode .however that said i'm not into running all metal just yet in parks my recovery methods need a lot of refining still . your recovery tools here would have one arrested that is if they even got past our customs service. thanks blowfly [glad to hear you are out and about tabdog]

On my trident 2 if you turn the disc right down until it clicks off, that is the all metal mode. I would be surprised if the V is not the same. For best results you will still need to GB it first and then adjust your threshold so that it is low and steady. When you find something you can thumb the disc to help you decide whether to dig or just go for it anyway. I am going to have a go at this myself soon as I think it should help to find things that others have missed due to disc allowing ferrous items to mask out close targets.

The decision as to which search mode to search in can be a very personal thing. Personally, I hunt in a true All Metal mode most of the time.

First, I can assure you that most people do NOT suggest you hunt wood-chip and sand-filled playgrounds in All Metal. I say that because MOST people only want to find coins and hope for a silver or gold ring, but use discrimination because they don't want to hear foil and other common trash.

As for hunting dry sand beaches, I think you will find a bigger percentage of hobbyists who might hunt in All Metal, the only reason being that they are mainly after gold jewelry.

As for hunting in an All Metal mode, not all detectors have a 'conventional,' Threshold-based All Metal mode. Your Vaquero DOES have such a search mode, accessed by clicking the Discriminate control fully counter-clockwise. Selecting this mode you then adjust the tuner control for a slight audio Threshold of sound, then adjust the Ground Balance for the most functional setting you can.

Another option for searching a challenging site is to hunt in a true all metal accept Discriminate mode. This would be what Tesoro refers to as ED-180 and this type of setting allows the operator to search a site w/o responding to the ground or rocks or challenging sand, but still respond to both ferrous and non-ferrous targets. Not every make and model has such a setting, and you Vaquero does NOT have this full, ED-180 capability.

I'm sure this will draw some readers comments, but several of Tesoro's models are not quite what some of their literature states. The Vaquero & Cibola are close to having a true ED-180 or all metal accept setting, but not quite. It's more like an ED-170

I've come to a conclusion:
Using the Tejon.
Set your discrimination to iron and dig every thing that repeats.

Blowfly,

You have had some of the best answers that can be got.

But I am still going at add my two cents.

The V has a great discriminate mode. But it is not the best
for tot lots. But don't despaired!!!!!!

The all metal mode on the V is just what I need to deplete a
tot lot of it's riches.

The V has a real good all metal. As said you get it by turning
the discriminate nob all the way counter clock wise until it clicks.

The ground balance and the threshold work directly with the
all metal mode.

There is no discrimination in all metal mode. In my opinion,
discrimination should not be used in most tot lots.

In my opinion the all metal of the Vaquero is the thing that
makes it a great tot lot machine.

But the all metal should always be assisted by the discriminate
mode in all types of hunting to get the full benefit of this machine.

Hope I have not confused you. I do not disagree with what has
been said, I just have a different view of the same citation. We all
have our own perspective.

Happy Hunting,

Tabdog

even before reading this post from you tabdog,i have been to day trying this way to do it and have found it to be very effective in tot lots.you have put the icing on the cake thank you.
