Vacation finds...

OK, it was a fun learning experience with the "New" ATP. Some of the stuff below was in an earlier post and other items are stuff found by the wife beach-combing; I tossed most of the more uninteresting junk/trash. The odd thing is that I got the ATP because of its excellent discrimination ability and trash elimination; after a day or so of hunting I found myself turning it to Pro Zero so I could hear everything. The one thing is for sure though, to truly know what a target is, it has to be dug out of the ground.

Anyone know how to ID a ring other than take it to a jeweler? I found one men's wedding band that hit at 41 and made a scratchy sound. (Ring is on left side of pic between the 10 paso coin and Canadian penny.)

Very nice:) also your right its best to dig every thing just to be on the safe side as u say the gold ring only give a 41 with a scratchy sound that's more or less in the iron area so alot ppl would of missed that well done for digging it up

Had a friend who passed up on a signal like that and I dug a gold plated crucifix. You just never know.

You can buy a gold test kit if you think you will use it enough. If it was a pretty scratchy signal there's a chance it's plated. Gold usually will give a nice smooth sound.

If it's not stamped on the inside, it's probably plate. If you look at it closely with a jewelers loupe, it's pretty apparent.

Great haul, controlfreq! Looks like you got a lot of practice in with the new detector, and you can't beat sand for easy digging!

I love digging in the sand; don't have to worry about tearing up the grass and the holes cover so easily...

Yea, I dug the scratchy sounding thing because it had such differing signals and I wanted to know what it was; it didn't have the iron tone either. I checked with a loop and could not find any markings on it, however, there were some damaged spots on the ring. It does appear to be plated, I just don't know with what. (... at least it will not stick to a magnet... :))
